Neti pot logistics

Hi, this might sound like a weird question, but I am an avid neti pot user and am going to be in India for a few months this spring. I'm wondering how you heat up your water for the neti pot, since I don't want to use warm water directly from the tap and I'm not going to be traveling w/a camping stove and pan for heating filtered water. Anyone else run into this dilema? Also, are they pretty easy to buy over there so I have one less thing to pack? Thanks!

I think you can get one of those little electric immersion heaters inexpensively. For an all-'round container, I usually carry a big enamelled tin cup (holds half-a-liter). I've heated water in it, soaked infected fingers, used it in the shower ... I think it cost a couple of dollars in San Francisco Chinatown, and it's been to India 3 times.

Sorry what is a neti pot? (Not another gadget I don't have - I'm still looking for a bag alarm...)

Yes - I thought the same thing, was going to direct the OP to the dreadlocked blog that is on the home page!

I just googled it - eeewww .. but not altogether useless I think... Sounds like something that might actually be useful in India!!!!!! If I feel 'snotty' I just snort up some salty water - makes your eyes water but works a treat!

I just googled it too.

Well, I'd have felt a bit sill if I'd shut the thread down as being to do with some sort of cannabis use, wouldn't it?

But now I know what it is, I'll just walk quietly away and leave you guys to it....

When I did a henna conference in London England on of the ladies swears by this and I watched her do it. Several brave souls then proceeded to attempt the procedure. I figured I've managed this long without it, I'll continue. I don't even like putting my face down in the water when I do the breast stroke! Too skittish to start pouring water up there! It seemed very uncomfortable and you have to really carry a tissue everywhere for the first while.

The London gal swears by it tho and is exceedingly healthy. Not sure if it's connected but can't knock it if ya never tried it I guess!

hi,

I dont exactly know what a neti pot is , but if you are referring to the one that helps to clear the nasal passage , then I use a simple steamer which works on electricity and it helps me with my sinews when I travel..You get it in most medical stores , especially in the big cities

No, I don't like water in the nose or ears either --- it's one of the things that contributed to my remaining a non-swimmer.

the neti pot technique really looks a lot worse than it really is. I swear by it and have also thought of bringing mine to india. I thought I would just use the bottled water tho as it will be room temperature anyway. if you can't get warm water that's OK because the fact that you use salt (you do use the salt right?) and the flushing effect of the water is good enough.

I was waiting for YG to find this thread

Don't know the neti pot thing, but I have a deviated nasal septum (bent cartilage in the nose). For some years as a teenager, I was advised to do this, but without any fancy equipment. Just my cupped palm full of salt water.

This is hilarious - thank you for all your responses - I have had a good chuckle this morning
For those of you who aren't net pot converts - I SWEAR by the thing. Any time I feel even slightly like I am getting sick I use it and put a few drops of goldenseal tincture in w/the salt water and it kills whatever might be getting me down. I've converted most of my friends and even my mom! So 3 months in India without it is much too long, especially after reading about the pollution.
Wonderwoman, I like your idea of the tin enameled cup and electric emersion heater - would be nice for tea too! I'll look for one of those heater things when I get to Delhi.
Thanks for all your comments/responses. I love this forum!

Oh no - here we go again!!!!

Why do you need the whole pot thing - just put some salty water in your palm and snort it up.... it does sting a bit, but I'm sure its the same effect... Here I just go for a swim in Dr Pacific Ocean
