I came back from India with all the same symptoms - got off the plane and went straight to my doctor's surgery. All the tests showed I'd picked up campylobacter - a notifiable disease here in the UK, and easily passed on to others if personal hygiene is less than perfect. It was sorted out with a few weeks' worth of antibiotics.
Go to the Doctor NOW. The consequences of leaving something like this really don't bear thinking about ....... heavens. you might not get back to India if it leaves you permanently sick, and that would never do. Get well - good luck! Oh, and in the meantime drink Coke with water, it's great for rehydration. |

I would like johnalex to post an up-date here so we know he hasn't lapsed into a coma or worse. And I'm only sort of joking.
Seriously, johnalex, are you out there? Please give us an update. I'm actually kind of anxious about your situation. I feel as if I've intercepted a short-wave SOS from someone who crashed a plane in a remote location and then had no further communication. |

Follow up to the tetracycline comments above: if, instead of seeing a doctor for a proper prescription, johnalex should stumble across some old, left-over tetracycline capsules in his or a friend's medicine cabinet, he shouldn't take them. I have read that outdated tetracycline is HIGHLY TOXIC TO THE KIDNEYS.

Your body is just reacting to all the processed foods that we have in the United States.
As you become accustomed to this rat poison the systems will lessen. 4-5 glasses of scotch and a coffee enema nightly will also help you re-adapt. |

hey,
I am alive still, just hadn't had time to repost because of class and work (which is not good do go to when you have my condition). The pooping has slowed down, but all I ate lately was some oatmeal. The pain is still consistant and has increased a bit. I am at my moms house now, there for the weekend and she has a ton of herbal medicines...soo I took some Sodium Cloride/Oxygen drops ( called Defenz) that I was told to put in water. I also took some V-3 which contains Lauricidin and Beta glucan. I also took some Imodium earlier today ( abot 4 hours ago). I am going to eat some lunch now, so I will see the results. My father who went on the trip as well is having the same problems but more severe problems. He is going to a doctor today to get checked out. I might bum off him what the doctor gives him. How I could of gotten sick: I did drink tap water a few times I believe, I did eat meat, I did drink juice from a street vender, and I did have ice some places. I believe any of those could of caused this. THANKS everyone so far..this is all VEYR helpful. John B |

I'm relieved you're still with us. Yes, the things you did are textbook examples of things you are supposed to avoid. Even though the runs may have slowed down, you may still have an infection and you should still see a doctor yourself, although I'm relieved to hear that your father is going to see one - maybe the result of that visit will convince you that you need the same treatment. |

Your reluctance to see a doctor amazes me. Your dad may not have the same thing as you!

"Powerful" Antibiotic
I would not call tetracycline a powerful antibiotic for Delhi Belly. That honor goes to Lomotil. Around 1984 in Kathmandu, Nepal there were an average of two westerners a month dying because of Lomotil. Lomotil works for some bowel complaints. However, if you have amoebic dysentery the Lomotil-induced stoppage may lead to a perforated intestine. The outcome is often fatal. Western doctors (especially American doctors) recommended Lomotil to be in a traveler's medical kit when visiting the Himalaya in the mid-80's. Dr. David Shlim at the CIWEC Clinic in Kathmandu helped put the Lomotil recommendations to rest. Note that the CIWEC Clinic does NOT recommend tetracycline.
Dzibead, you are absolutely correct in stating NOT to take tetracycline that is past its expiration date. Tetracycline is a medicine I bring back to the States with me when returning from India or Nepal. Having trekked extensively in the Himalaya I am aware that you must be your own doctor while on the trail. I am recommending tetracycline because it worked for me. Again, it is only the red/yellow capsules of tetracycline that work. You could not give me the blue/white capsules! |

Hmmm I can only concur with many others here. If you think you've contracted something serious your first thought should not be oh let me contact this traveller's forum, rather to get some professional help. If your dad has got the same but more serious surely he'd be sympathetic to paying towards both your bills? Unless the two of you blew your last money in going to India I guess.
Good luck anyway, unless you're a prankster trying to give everybody a scare.

I agree that if the tetracycline has not worked the first day a visit to the doctor should be in your next day's horoscope. I have caught some constructive flak on the tetracycline front.
However, I am absolutely right when I say eating yogurt will make you solid again. Whoever stated that dairy products are bad for you when you have diarrhea is all wet. Yogurt is a dairy product. Yogurt works. Just beware that the first day you stop eating yogurt you may be sick again. In Nepal it is called the Yeti's Revenge! |
