No... I don't think so.
Agree - sadly this is the standard practice in guest houses when bedbugs are reported - half a can of insecticide on your mattress.

I heard that it is more effective to put the mattress on the roof in the hot sun for the day. Most insecticides just don't touch bedbugs.

Undoubtedly, that is a most effective solution, however it requires a few days of strong hot sunlight to really work, and even then the odd "bucheee" will still survive as they have a nasty tendency to;

but is this feasible when you have just checked into a hotel and discover bed bugs?

What is feasible then is checking right out, and going to another neighborhood, the little buggers can travel between buildings. Then put your luggage out in the sunlight.

Yes, I'm with Snowcrab on that one; there is no reason one should have to put up with them.

snonymous, thanks for the information --- I really hope I never need it, but if I do, I'll remember to give it more than one day of hot Chennai sun.

Turn on the light & pull back the covers fast. If there are bed bugs, they move very fast to get back in the dark. They are tiny but you can see them. If they are there you will not be able to get rid of them. They won't hurt you (they don't carry diseases--mosquitos are much more of a worry) but they will probably upset you!

If it's any consolation, I've never found any bugs under the sheets in India in many trips and at some very low budget filthy hotels. I've only encounted bed bugs once in 30 years of travel and it was in Africa. And it was awful but not dangerous. Just lots of bites.

My friends make their sleep sacks from nice kashmiri silk sarees, which leave them enough silk to also use as a matching travel towel. Pure luxury with not much extra weight.
Agreed. I bought a silk sleeping sack last year in Varkala for about Rs 350. Great investment. I use it all the time, even in hot weather. Compresses down to a very small package, and it came with a carry bag in the same fabric. Wouldn't travel without it.

found in india?

My travel book says to bring sleeping sack with me. Is that necessary or are there silky light and warmer sacks available there too?
