At the risk of sounding stupid here, are you insured!!! If so what's all the commotion about money??? If your boyfriend really isn't showing signs of improvment then I would consider moving him to the Apollo and bugger the cost.
The hospital he's in does sound a bit shady if they'e telling you he is still to dehydrated after a couple of days under they're care ( a drip should sort out this problem in 24 hours)
It could just be that they are seizing the chance to rip off a couple of whities assuming your insured!
Try telling the doctor he is being too evasive and you think you would be better served in the Apollo it may prick his professional concience!!
If your not insured I'm afraid you've learned one hard lesson about travel in Asia but to hell with the money and flights to Bangalore (cancel it it's no problem) this is your loved ones health your talking about, pay what needs to be paid and put it down to experience!!
I hope everything gets sorted out for you, wish you all the best!!!!

Sympathies, jweinsto, looks like you're getting sorted, and I hope things get better for the two of you.

Just for the record, how much does a stay in an Indian hospital cost? Is somewhere like Apollo (never been in one, but I guess a Westerner would feel at home there...) on a par with an expensive hotel, or what? how much would it vary from City to City?

A piece of string question, I know, but...

Glad to hear that apparently everything worked out OK. One note for future readers too, not a personal attack (and some others above have implied similar questions): What I didn't really get is how when on the one hand you sound very worried about your friend's health, on the other hand you post a panicky-titled message here amounting to aren't we paying too much. A couple of thousand Rs. doesn't sound so bad if at least your friend is being treated for something that you make sound potentially serious. If the event comes up again I'd rather listen to what the doctor in question has to say than to what friends at home said before you left, how could they possibly know beforehand how many days of treatment you'd need and what it would cost in case of any real event? Moving a patient around just because of money issues when you suspect something serious is up doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.

Anyway I hear the Apollo has a good reputation yes and I think it's where I got some extra shots when I was there, I don't have my guidebook or notes with me right now so can't look it up for you. I suppose your or any embassy could also advise on reputable hospitals if it comes up again.

Good luck + a healthy continued journey.

The point is more that if the price is not appropriate for the industry, then perhaps neither is the care.
If you come from a country where an advance deposit is highly irregular, it would certainly raise a red flag.
He/She was right to be concerned.
Jweinsto, check your PMs.

I think I would be alarmed too, if a doctor asked for an advance.

Points by NIT and Manojb well taken.

I guess my point was: if you or your friend fall ill get them to a proper place of treatment. Your guidebook should be able to advice you on it. If you insist on travelling without one then take some tel. numbers of your own or other countries' embassies or consulates with you who should be able to advise you. Lacking these ask someone you trust like your hotel owner or someone. Once you get a patient treated don't complicate your own or other people's minds thinking are they getting the right treatment, is it costing too much. Get them treated first and maybe next time you'll be wiser.

On a platform like this, writing a topic like "my friend's in the hospital -- help!" will get some well-meaning people pretty alarmed. The OP could have written "hospital bill -- what to do?"

FWIW the place where I went for my shots in Delhi was the East West Medical Centre I think. Having grown up in the tropics it seemed OK to me and the staff were good, but for a westerner these places may not look up to standards and a long wait is usually involved. Just a word for future readers here.

Safe travels and again, happy that the OP got through alright apparently.

Ok, I see what you're saying, machadinha. I think the whole situation was really alarming to me. Yes, I was concerned that if the doctor was cheating me that my boyfriend might not be getting proper care (for example, that he might slow the treatment in order to keep him for longer) but I was also concerned that, since the doctor expected upfront payment, it might wind up maxing out our entire bank accounts and worse. An American hospital bill could surely do that.

Anyway, we left the hospital and he is now quite a bit better. I am so grateful for all of your responses. The whole situation was really scary for me, so it was great to know that there were so many people willing to help.

Good to hear that Annie...So what happened finally? Did the doc act funny? Did you get a proper bill? Do let us know.
