My boyfriend's in the hospital in New Delhi - help!
After a few days of normal traveler's diarrhea, this morning, my boyfriend began vomiting and could not hold any water down. Panicked, we went to a hospital (Jeewan Nursing Home and Hospital in New Delhi). While he does seem to be doing better and the treatment seems to be ok, the doctor seems REALLY shady and won't talk to me about money besides having already asked for a 3000 rupee deposit and 1000 for supplies. He insists that my boyfriend needs to stay in the hospital for at least 2 days. I've heard from other people before my trip that such visits should usually last 1 day and shouldn't cost more than about $35 USD. Does anyone have any advice?

1. What part of Delhi are you/ friend at? Take a chance and move you're friend to another, bigger hospital.
2. Do you have someone in Delhi who you know? 3. First thing is to ensure your friend is out of danger, cos then the worst is you'll have over paid. If he's reasonably well, take some of his reports from this hospital/nuse home and show to another doctor (not across the street, if this really is a shady hospital, they will most likely have association.) 4. Keep calm and act on your own feedback.

Why don't you move him to Apollo. The number is
011-26925858. It is a really big professional hospital. Never heard of this Jeevan nursing home. |

i don't think its worth going through the trouble of moving your BF if he is goin to be there for only 2 days. Consider this
1. He is already feeling better 2. How much would a 2 day stay cost in Sweden? You can always negotiate with the hospital after he is better. Currently you are out of pocket $70. Whuiel you are waiting you could check around with other hospitals (on the phone) to see what their rates are. Once he is ready to be discharged, you can decide how much you want to pay. Doctors in India are generally honest. Last edited by crvlvr : Mar 17th, 2005 at 01:52. |

Do you know if it's any of the following: -
Jeewan Hospital-V & Aseem Nursing Home 3A East Park Road, Model Basti, New Delhi-110005 Phone:3673939, 3523235 or Jeewan Nursing Home 2-B, Pusa Road, New Delhi-110005 Phone:5721902, 5784632 You should keep a receipt of every medication your boyfriends been given, there's probibly nothing wrong with the doctor, maybe he's had a tough time with tourists in the past. Is there any connection between the places your boyfriend ate and the people who recommended this doctor/hospital?

Still trying to sort this out
Hi everyone,
Thanks for all of your help so far. The situation right now is this: He is at the Jeewan Nursing Home on Pusa Rd. There is a slight possibility that there is, in fact, a connection with the people who brought us there and the food they gave us, however, I think my boyfriend was sick before eating with them. Aside from money which we finally got out from the doctor that it should end up costing 15,000 rupees, the doctor is also telling us he might need to stay a total of 4 days (thus making us miss our flight to Bangalore). Additionally, my boyfriend is still dehydrated (according to the symptoms and to the doctor) and it seems to me that after being there for a full day they should have fixed that. I think I'll give a call to Apollo as well as to some of you who have given me your phone numbers. Thanks so much. Annie |

I think it's going to be ok
So we decided to move him out of that hospital to another hospital but while we were packing up the nurse confided that she thinks he's just fine (even though the doctor was telling us he'd have to stay until Saturday), so she prescribed him some antibiotics and we decided that we'd go to Apollo if things seem bad again. Thanks everyone!
