I have used chloroqine for that (bitter) and later doxycycline. The latter isn't recommended for children under the age of 12 because of potential dental staining. However, I fudged it a bit since Hyderabad is a big center for malaria (and I bit it there too). Malarone would be by far the best even if you can only afford it for the kids..

Thanks everyone for the info. Really helpful. I think we have decided to bite the bullet and go with chloroqine for a host of reasons although I need to talk it over further with our paediatrician.

I had hoped to avoid the whole issue but the mossies love our pasty white skin - when I first arrived in Hong Kong I was bitten alive and ended up with a reactive arthritis due to a mossie-borne illness . That was horrific so contracting malaria isn't high on the list of experiences I hope to provide for my daughter!

Ok, thanks for the help everyone.

Hmmm... I think there is more to mossie bites than the usual talked-of serious illnesses. I often have a low-grade fever, and I often suspect the mossie bites.

my daughter is only 18#, so too small for meds. I am taking malarone and it was covered by my insurance (so only $20 USD). I am still breastfeeding and it is not recommended to do this with a child under 24# (lacks of research), but, if she ends up with malaria, the recommended treatment is with malarone.
