Mozzie zappers
Can anyone tell me if there are any health hazards with using plug-in mosquito 'machines' as they call them here. I have one that has a liquid slowly evaporating and is very effective but since I have now been using it for nearly 2 years, is this going to have some effect on my health?? I place it high up on top of a cupboard and not too close to the bed or to food areas. Some answers would be much appreciated!

I've never had any problems with the liquid zappers, and I haven't heard of any advisories against using them. I always carry one when I travel.
Mosquito coils are another matter. I would never leave one burning in a room where I'm sleeping. But burning one just outside your door can create a "safe zone" so the mozzies don't hang around and fly in when you open the door. If you want to clear a heavily infested room in a hurry, get one of the mosquito mats (a little blue thingie about 2cm x 3cm), light it well, then blow out the flame but leave it smoldering. Wave the smoke around the room. Very effective. You may need to light it two or three times.

Thanks Jean-Philipe very helpful suggestions! Now I know what to do about the hordes of mozzies outside my kitchen window early morning -and also the doors off our room where I would like the cool air to come in but not the creatures. The mats - are these the ones you put in plug-in machines and they have a silver backing?

I would never burn the mats/tablets, they are designed to release the repelent when gently heated ... there is no knowing what toxic chemicals are released when you burn them!

My thoughts too.
If you want instant death to mossies use an aerosol spray with the doors and windows closed (and you outside!). One hour later: No mossies or flies. But then, you're supposed to air the room afterwards... |

Netlon? Is this mozzie gauze on the windows? I have this but the holes are too big!! Nick-H sorry to change the thread for a second but I am new - what is a 'sticky' envelope beside a thread? I have looked it up but can't find answer and you as a moderator should know to give me quick answer.
I searched Netlon on Google and seemed to come up with plastic gauze and garden equipment. |

Yes, netlon is just that, and its holes are not too big, they keep the mosquitoes out.
There is also St Gobain, which is, I think a finer weave, so probably allows more air in. That's what I'm aiming to get for the new house. Simplest way to do it is have it attached with velcro. That way you can remove it for full ventilation, or for necessary occasional washing. Last price I saw was about Rs80 a sq ft. For twice as much you can have an opening frame made on the inside of your window. |

Brilliant Nick-H! Not available here in the back of beyond but next time I am in a big city will purchase along with the Velcro - in the meantime I think I will settle for the coils outside, the liquid on at night and just the existing windows with wire net open (sort of cuts down on the big ones!)Some very helpful advice has come through for me, thanks all.

that netlon thing is the best thing ever. if you are disciplne senough to shut the doors (as they don't have netlon) during the twilight hours, when mosquitos come in to the house, ift pretty much leads to mosquito free living indoors. Rememebr, anything that kills mosquitos, coils or liquids, are poson and cannot be good for humans. In case a few mosquitos get into the bedroom, I turn on All-Out for a few hours and shut the door before I go to bed. I turn it off when I enter the bed room.

I intend to have netlon inner doors in the new house.
Here we have reduced the numbers getting in (we have netlon on all the windows) by hanging a net curtain outside the front door. One or two always make it through the defences.... |

Getting to the nitty-gritty - if I use Velcro do I stick it to the window frame and then sew bits on the netlon? Or do I need to have a wooden frame made which is then inserted into the window (this takes ages to be done here) if the sticking-on idea works would be much quicker for me. Thanks, fellows!

I've seen both methods being employed so go with the velcro idea if you're a bit handy!

I wish it were this easy Nick-H! We don't have anyone like this advertising in our newspaper here - the only ads featuring are from multi-national coys. and big business India wide. Where I live (check my profile if you like!) to get flyscreens done is a matter of waiting for the carpenter to finish his last job, then waiting many days while he works on the spot and drives you crazy (this experience while we were building!) takes forever etc....His tools are very basic and he leaves pencil marks which I can't get rid of on good off-white laminex...This thread is not about workmanship so I won't go on! I will do it myself with the velcro idea then it will be done very fast as soon as I buy the stuff in the next big city! Thanks for your suggestion anyway which makes it sound so simple...
