Sorry - egg on face, burnt my Lonely Planet - thats the total for India: "In 1999, India had 40,939,000 vehicles and 306,400 road traffic accidents, which correspond to a rate of 7.5 accidents/ 1 000 vehicles. Of the total 340,454 accidental injuries and 244,412 accidental deaths, 95.3% injuries (324,520) and 33.2% deaths (81,036) were due to road traffic, which correspond to rates of 7.9 and 2.0 per 1 000 vehicles respectively." From the WHO report and it was 7 years ago.

In Mumbai apparently there are 15 road deaths a day according to the BBC. Sorry again for the gaff

80000 would seem about right I guess, as with all Indian stats the sheers number of people makes every statistic seem a little far fetched!

I have not ridden in Delhi but understand that it is much safer than here in Chandigarh. The drivers here are crazies, they drive with blinkers on, head first into round abouts at speeds of 50 ~ 60 km/h, with no giving way, no right hand rule and the outward appearance of Rhinoceros and apparent eye sight to match.

Delhi from my understanding has slower traffic and so is safer and easier to manage. There is a daily minimum of one scooter or bike crushed under a bus with generally no survivors and with the bus driver absconding likety split from the scene of carnage. This place is not for the faint hearted, no point considering your longevity when entering a round about here. If you have ridden a dirt or trail or even at times a trials bike before, then that is the manner to get through these squeeze zones and in all honesty it takes 150% full concentration to get in one piece. God help us all.

yogagal60510 mira, mira, mira! so wonderful to see you again!

Why thank you yogagal.

I have been lurking about quietly but since being here in India, feel most inadequate to post much about anything, let alone anything that has any firm basis. It is almost like nothing is true, though it never was anyway and even more so when one is in it up to ones arm pits.

disclaimer: I've not read the postins above and do not understand the question well.
I've never seen any serious accident while riding a Motocycle in last 8 years, apart from a UP transport bus running over my friend who is alive and riding..
At the samtime I lost one of by coworker coz he was 'to be' in line of the falling power cable, yes he died in minutes.
SO?
