Mosquito nets?

I am from the UK and I will be travelling February/March in Northern India (Delhi, Agra, Rajatstan, Calcutta, Darjeeling). I intend staying in fairly cheap places (c 500 rupees).

Will hotels have their own nets or should I get my own?

Are nets effective?

If I get my own are they significantly cheaper to purchase in India?

Thanks.

I'm always travelling with my own net.
I think its better because with your own one you are more familiar and you know how to handle it.

And yes! nets are effective if you have mosquitoes around you at night

I was very very happy that I had it with me this year (end of february) in Varanasi...

Even in some of the otherwise excellent hotels the mozzie nets can be a bit a bit manky - ranging from damp and musty to dirty and torn.

As they are lightweight I would recommend taking your own - you can look after it and keep in intact and reliable.

Also a good tip is to make sure you have a length of string (usually supplied with a net). Because you can't always find an anchor above the bed, for instance because of the ceiling fan, you can use a string to stretch from say, the top of a doorway to a curtain rail. You can then hang the net from part way along this string.

Check the mattress and headboard for bugs, tuck in your net and you will have a perfect night's sleep!

Good luck, rab.

Are mosquito nets widely & cheaply available in India & Nepal? I can't seem to get hold of one in China, apparently they only stock them here in summer. Although one of my students has given me one but its abit on the manky side.

I would say that in the 500R's room range a lot of places should supply mosquito nets. However I don't take a chance on this and always carry a very lightweight net that I bought in our local Cotswold camping shop here in UK. I doubt if you will find these lightweight nets for sale in India. It's extremely effective and means I get a sound night's sleep in mosquito infested areas. If there are only a few mosquitoes around I tend to just plug in one of the mosquito zappers cheaply available in India.

At this time of year you shouldn't have any problems in Kathmandu or Pokhara in Nepal but if you're visiting the low lying Terai area on the borders of Nepal and India (say, Chitwan National Park) you will definitely see mosquitoes. Many places supply mosquito nets in these malarial areas. As you're going to be travelling mainly in North India in the middle of winter you won't see many mosquitoes ( apart from Bharatpur which always seems to have hordes) and a mosquito zapper should be enough. I've hardly ever used my mosquito net in northern India in winter.
