Hi there,

I will be in India for 5 weeks. Starting in Goa then heading to Rajasthan, Delhi and back to Mumbai from mid Dec to early Feb.

Is it easy to purchase a mos net if I need one? Do you think I will need one for these areas? I don't really want to buy one if I don't need it as travelling on from India so don't want the extra lugguge if I don't really need to. I know some places have their own nets but that's always a risk too.

Should I or Shouldn't I purchase a net before going?

Mosquitoes will be everywhere, the chances of being bitten are high
- if u r stationary and dont shrug-off any bites
- smell good [the kind mosq'toes like]
- during rainy season

On trains, I didn't have that problem bcos the train moves fast and probably the wind keeps them off. Also the train shakes/rocks left-right continuously and this could be a deterrent.

Whether you need to carry a net ? I never used a mos-net in my lifetime. But, now it is rainy season in India and hence mosq-toes will be active.

It is entirely your call, if you enuf have space to carry it..then do so. It is also available in India for very cheap rates[approx Rs200].

i always have a net when i am in goa... i swell up real bad when i get bit so i need to avoid getting bit and i don't use deet... you can get nets quite cheap when you get there and not only do they help keep away bites i feel they protect from other little things like dusty stuff dropping off the roof of my hut when the crows are hopping around ontop of it and in gokarna it kept a barrier between me and the critters... i know they can get through if they want to but i felt better having the net around me... my friend did not have a net and a rat ran across her chest in the middle of the night and freaked her right out... it just depends on how you feel about other things, not just mosquitos... my other friends are much more chilled out than me and are happy without a net. some of the nets for sale in goa are quite nice too and in different colours. my mates daughter had a wicked pink one...
have an excellent time on your travels... we are heading out to goa on saturday... i am about to explode with excitement!

Hey there,

You have made some good points here and I think i will get one once I am there as quite expensive to buy in London. I can't wait either! I leave next Thursday and am heading straight to Palolem! I love it there and have a couple of friends already there so I am very jealous!!!. Have a wonderful holiday!!!

You CAN buy a net in India, but would you want to when the ones that you get in London are half the weight and take up half the space in your pack. To quote from the notes on my 'Packing List' page:

The best type are the wedge-shaped ones; high at the head-end, low at the feet, they only require a single-point fixing - sometimes its hard to find more in a hotel room. Don't forget to tuck in under the matress all around once you have got into bed. You will also need a length of cord or string to attach your net - about 3 or 4 metres sounds a lot but is often needed for high fixing-points.

Its unlikely to be that much, but even if you *do* spend £20 on a net in the UK, the difference in quality and usability is tremendous. Those Indian nets are really thick and heavy, and impossible to stow compactly in your bag. But here's the worst bit: they are designed to be fastened at all 4 corners !!! This is OK if you have a bed with 4 posts - some do, of course, (in hotels or railway retiring rooms that probably provide a net anyway!) but the majority don't. Imagine trying to find 4 fixing points in a normal cheap hotel Finding one is often hard enough! Those nets are meant to be left permanently in position, not put up and taken down each day as a traveller would be doing. A backpacker would be just plain stupid to buy a net like that.

True. Well, mostly at least; I don't think my GBP3 net is particularly heavy, but I did buy it as a permanent fix. It's corners are held apart with lengths of light plastic pipe, turning it into a tent that is hung from two points. One day I'll get around to putting them along the long sides as well.

I always liked the look of the free-standing ones, but never found one in London

I'm a newbie here, and I need advice.. As it seems possible to buy a mosquito net in India, I thought I might buy one in Mumbai. So where should I head in Mumbai to get one?

I prefer to buy mine in London before I go. As mentioned they are more expensive but they are more durable and you also get all the hooks you need to go with it. You could try getting a second hand one to save a little. They are a bit of a pain to carry around as they aren't needed in all parts of India but better to be safe.

I am not sure of any shops in Mumbai but you would have no trouble asking one of the locals or even at your hotel or room where you stay.
