How not to get bites: When leaving for work, shut all doors and windows and leave a whole 'kachchua chaap' (Tortoise mosquito coils, green in colour) lit in the center of your house. (All fire safety applies...)

This will allow a reletively bite free evening, then ofcourse near the sleeping area you need the net, the spray, the pump, the mat and more coils.

Also if you can choose to live above 4 floors, it will bring mozzie attack to 25% (down by 75% i.e) automatically.

Yeah if you can keep lots of 'chchipkalis' (gecko/lizard) as pets... just kiddin ya big guy...

There may be much deeper in the jungle. I was in Port Au Prince, although we got out of the city some. If it grows there, I would suspect everything that grows there has gone the way of the monkey, parrot, and trees--eaten or used for some other human necessity. (there are no more monkeys or parrots in Haiti, unless right next to Dominican Republic. Starving people took precedence--understandable, but sad).

nb re: wild aloe, just stumbled across http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s.../cat/504/page/ .
A more household variety is recommended for indoor use
OK free shots for everyone who can tell us this is not aloe vera.

scratch!

howdy all

i just found this and wanted to share:

I've just been bitten by a mosquito - what should I do?

Scratch! Not just a little scratch - have a really good scratch. Forget what your mother told you. Nature gave us the urge to scratch for a good reason. Scratching stimulates the immune response and a strong initial immune response at the site of the mosquito sting may be enough to stop viruses transmitted by the mosquito from spreading.

from www.bugsmart.com.au

I certainly never thought it was good to scratch!

Hmmm, yes... then you get broken skin, Then the broken skin gets infected

Washing with hot water is good. Holding something hot (eg a tea cup) against the bite is good ...or sometimes an icecube seems best.

But there are times ...when you just have to scratch!

Funny that ..........I always squeeze them 'til it hurts . Someone asked me if it did any good. I said I didn't know but the stinging from the pinch takes your mind off the bite

Spit on them (the bites, not the mosquitos). It really works.

To deal with the itching I like creams or ointments with Benadryl (i.e., diphenhydramine). Over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams are also good. And there there are the old standbys: calamine lotion, and - most basic of all - a paste made from baking soda and water.

For mosquito itch rub Tiger Balm oinment over the area of bite and all the itch goes away quickly, the only thing is the strong smell of Chinese medicine.
