Monistat, Vagisil available in India?
So, I don't really think I need to go into WHY i'm asking this question, but it's rather urgent and I'm planning on going to the chemist in a few hours to ask for some RELIEF! So, is Monistat and Vagisil available in India? If not under those names, then what is the equivalent?
Thanks.. |

It really helps to know the chemical name of what you're looking for, as India may not have the same brands as are available in the US.
I suspect you can Google for these. |

Panipuri,
They are probably available here but not under that name as Wonderwoman suggests. My suggestion - if I were you I would find out the number of a good hospital in Hyderabad, speak to the Gyny and ask her what is this called in India and I'm sure she will either give you the name or recommend another ointment that is similar.

I did some research and headed to the chemist.. the guy had no idea what I was talking about.. well it was about time for me to go to my 34week pregnancy check up, I decided to go today.. got a script for some cream and all that. First yeast infection I've had, but the doc said they're common during pregnancy.
Visiting this doctor is always enjoyable, even if it's for a yeast infection! They adore me, their token gori! Heheh |

Not that I have found
It took 3 pharmacies to find one who understood what I wanted. I told one guy I had a yeast infection and he directed me to the next-door bakery. I used Clotrimazol Vaginal Gel by Candid-V Gel. Not as good as the stuff in the states I must say but it worked. Hope you find somthing that works! If you find Monistate please tell me

What you want is yogurt. In fact, India should be the prime place for this, because the curd you get probably doesn't have all the live cultures sucked out of it like most American yogurt does.
Apply liberally once or twice a day until symptoms cease. You might want to wear a pad, because it can get a bit messy. The cultures in the yogurt eat the yeast and get the lady back in order. Monistat and the like are pretty foul, and the YI's most women get aren't heinous enough to need all that. |

This is the first time I've had a yeast infection, when the doctor (the second one.. seems I get special treatment at this tiny clinic - totally 4 people got to check out my nether regions JUST FOR A YEAST INFECTION) anyway, she said MY GOD, THIS IS A SEVERE INFECTION, how many days have you been suffering? Haha. I do love India though. |

I like medications and have found a few good pharmacies here in Chennai with good real drugs. By the way my first yeast infection came when I was pregnant too but there is no bun in the oven right now. I think the guy just wanted to get rid of me and played dumb. I found going to a larger store helps because there is a greater chance some one speaks you language if you have no idea what the medication you need is or the ingredients.

That said, it's got to be near impossible to anticipate every last "female thing" you might need, and ridiculous to bring an entire pharmacy's worth in your luggage. India is not the moon. Yeast infections are uncomfortable, but you're not going to die in the time it takes to figure out what the Indian brand name for Monistat or whatever is (or figure out what Indian women use).

Yeah, but at the same time, I have a "female emergency", what, once ever couple years? What's the likelihood that I'm going to need Monistat, UTI meds, a pregnancy test, a speculum, etc in the small period of time I have in India? How many men carry a special kit just in case their "equipment" acts up in a foreign country?
I'll bring some extra tampons and maybe a dose of the Morning After pill. The rest I'm leaving up to God and the many trustworthy pharmacists I am sure have set up practice in India. Besides which, might be an interesting way to make friends... |

Doctor
In the end I still had to go to the doctor for the right combo of antibiotics and a cream. Yep you meet some interesting people when you have this problem. I did bring a pharmacy but did not expect this.
