Is it possible to buy methylphenidate, also known as Ritalin, in India?

I ask because my cousin in Delhi was diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year. His psychiatrist suggested Ritalin which we obtained from the US via a family friend. Although this has helped in the short term, we cannot rely on this source for long term supply.

From my enquiries in Delhi, I have not been able to find methylphenidate, on prescription or otherwise.

My father flew out to India today from the UK for a few weeks. He will be in Bombay initially and then onto Jaipur, Delhi and Bihar. I will be in India a couple of times later this year.

Any advice will be most appreciated.

The sad news is that it is unavailable in Indid. It is too closely relate to amphetamine which is banned in India by a treaty to fight the, you know, drug war. It was easy for them to ban certain pharmacological substances so they did.

I think you'll also find that India, like most developing non-Western countries, doesn't have much of a mental health profession or infrastructure. For that matter, not much of a medical system at all, actually.

Wealthy Indians often have to go overseas for "exotic" treatments and drugs.

You might just try to bring as much as you can or apply for some sort of Government waiver, permission, etc.,which... will take a while, be a huge hassle, and might not even work. Personally, I would talk to an Indian doctor in your home country and see what they recommend.

The availability of Ritalin in the UK, like in the US, is very tightly controlled. Basically his current supply is from stock a patient returned to a psychiatrist friend in New Jersey. It will last another couple of months at most.

I wonder if the British Embassy would be willing to bring the stuff into the country for you? In my experience, British consular officials often are willing to help in some unorthodox ways. If you have to deal with U.S. diplomats, forget it. They're all strictly by-the-books, especially if it means they don't have to do anything.

However, I once was told by the British Embassy in Vietnam that they would help me smuggle money into the country, for an American citizen, if the State Department in the U.S. would approve. That was before we renewed diplomatic relations with Vietnam (1991), and I was told that we were still "at war" with Vietnam, which caused me to laugh out loud. I ended up sending the money through a guy in New York who knew some Chinese pirates in Hong Kong. The money arrived, minus a small handling fee.

But anyway, you might contact the British Embassy and explain your situation. The Embassy physician might be able to help.

...and the US FDA does not approve the active substance for the treatment of ADHD, and clinical trials of modafinil for treatment of ADHD are inconclusive and cited concerns about serious adverse reactions.

ADHD is a very 'popular' syndrome the last couple of years, use of Ritalin in the west has shot up, along with abuse, this is not a harmless drug. Unless the psychiatrist is specifically trained in diagnosing this condition and has abundant experience, get a second opinion from a specialist.

Embassies and diplomats are supposed to respect their host countries' legislation, not encourage breaking the law.

Yes towards this query, it is available in Mumbai under the name of inspiral-both plain and slow release. You need to see your treating psychiatrist for this. I also have an ADHD child using this medicine.
