meningococcal disease in Delhi

dear all,
I have seen in the WHO site that there is an epidemy of meningococcus in Delhi right now. Can anyone give me news from the place? Any warning from authorities? Any precaution to take? Thanks

Feddy

I haven't heard anything about the outbreak in Delhi, but if there is any truth to the rumor at all, I would highly recommend getting the vaccine. I am a teacher and one of our students died in the spring from meningitis. It's a horrifyingly quick illness. Our student first got symptoms late Friday night and passed away on Monday morning after being in the hospital all weekend with a 110 degree fever and all of his systems shutting down one by one. Not a pretty way to go...

Also, it isn't just a matter of staying away from sick people; many people who are exposed become carriers but don't become sick themselves. So you could share a kiss or a beverage with someone who is completely healthy and still end up getting meningitis from him/her.

Just my 2 cents...

Do a search on this forum for meningococcal, or see http://www.mdtravelhealth.com/destin...a/india.html#4 which refers to May 2005. The advice at the time seemed to be to beware of crowded places -- in India, yeh right

Or as they put it:

Quote:
An outbreak of meningococcal disease was reported from Delhi in May 2005, resulting in 405 cases and 48 deaths as of June 8. In retrospect, the outbreak probably began in late March. Most cases have occurred in young adults, and most have been reported from the walled city of Old Delhi ... Meningococcal vaccine is recommended for travelers to Delhi if close contact with the local populace is likely.
The latter category would describe any visitor to Delhi if you ask me; otherwise sensible advice. To put those numbers in perspective, according to recent LP figures Delhi has a population of 13.8 million, which is not to say that such warnings should be taken lightly.

meningococcal disease

I just went to get vaccinated yesterday, and apparently there are no more cases of meningococcal disease (WHO took it off there list this last week), so no needs for this vaccination!
