Medicine in India
My experience at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai, after being gored by a bull, confirmed India's reputation for offering world-class medical care.
Not all Indian doctors, however, qualify as smart or well-educated, as this story proves. It's from the Times of India (Bhubaneswar-National Edition), 12 October 2007: Doc couple kills son in botched transfusion Rohtak: A doctor couple attempted an ill-advised blood transfusion from their "talented" son to the average elder child to ensure his place in an MBBS course bleeding the younger son to death. While Piyush died, his mother Dr Promila Malik, a professor of anaesthesia, was found injured along with her elder son Abhishek, who too was wounded, in their home on the campus of the Pandit Bhagar Dayal Sharma Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. Both Dr Pomila and her husband, Dr Ashok Malik, who works at Amritsar Hospital, have been arrested . . . Police found Piyush lying in a pool of blood and also recovered suspicious material such as mustard, kerosene oil, incense sticks and matchboxes, sparking suspicion of tantrik activity. . . . Investigators revealed that sixth grader Piyush was brilliant in studies while Abhishek, 18, was average. He was preparing for his medical entrance examination and his parents were desperate to get him enrolled in an MBBS course. It's learnt that the superstitious mother saw her guru in a dream who advised her to transfuse the blood of their younger son to the elder as this would ensure his admission to a medical college. . . . |
