Medical Tourism

Hospitals in India treated 150,000 foreign patients in 2005, according to IndUShealth, an American company that arranges overseas surgery. Costs for medical care are routinely 70 to 80 percent less in India compared with the United States.

Last year, an estimated half-million Americans traveled overseas for medical treatment. It's a growing trend among not only the well-to-do who want tummy tucks and face lifts, but the working-class uninsured searching for affordable heart surgery, knee replacements and dental work.

Oh sh1t, here we go, when we get a thread like this we get lots of new members, all trying to sell medical tourism packages......the power of Google eh.

I'm Not having a go at you Sanjay, it's a worthy subject and an interesting one, it just has unseen side effects.

Better to have 'unseen side effects' here than on the operating table I suppose.

Well, my idea of starting a thread like this was to get IMers who have been to India for treatment to share their views and opinion.
And anyone seeking info can look forward to some unbiased advice.
No commercial packages intended to be sold here-in!

regarding medical tourism, my advice to fellow IM'rs , don't blindly go after the the name of big corporate hospitals!!, what matters is the doctor concerned......most good hospitals are at par in terms of comfort levels and service!
a good doctor usually does not get atached to a single hospital, they prefer to rather have private practice as consultant and attends to most of the good hospitals.
any futher query is welcome.

Medical Treatment in India

I was gored by a bull near the Monkey Temple in Jaipur. I didn't realize how much injury I'd suffered till several days later. By that time I was in Chennai (Madras). My wife, in California, checked with our family physician; he urged me to get medical attention immediately.

A doctor called by my hotel (the Taj Connemara) referred me to the Apollo Hospital.

Treatment at the Apollo was fast -- two visits in one day -- and high–tech. It included exams by three surgeons, a CAT scan, the draining of a large hæmatoma, an antibiotics shot, and four prescription drugs.

Total cost: US$44 plus $20 for the drugs.

Comparable care in the US would have cost thousands and required two or more days to complete.

This definitely sounds good, but i really wonder about the side-effects, it will have some that is for sure, but would it outweigh the benifits that is yet to be seen..

The benefits are low cost medical help but medical facilities on par with the rest of the world in many cases. No need to wait for a long time in a list as in some places in the west.People end up saving loads of money.Rt nw Thailand is leading India in this sector .The gov is considering introducing Medical visa(or have they done that already?)
So it is a win win situation for all the parties concerned so i wonder what the side affects you are alluding to are?

Welcome to India mike By the way.

MT In Reverse Gear?
The Scottish tourist industry is being urged to market the fresh air of the Scottish outdoors to entice a new and wealthy generation of "health tourists" to spend time and money in the country.
With ageing populations and rising disposable incomes in many countries, health-related holidays have been identified by VisitScotland as one of global tourism's biggest trends.

Walking and cycling holidays already bring an estimated £220m into Scotland annually, with spa breaks adding another £70m.
