Meat is available in cities, towns, villages and in the countryside.
If you want it fresh, have it killed for you or kill it yourself. Many butchers have live chickens for sale, so get one and you'll know it is fresh. If you want mutton, or any other meat, the butcher will butcher it before your very eyes, and as you are cooking it yourself, you can make sure it is well-cooked (and therefore bacteria free) before eating it. If you suddenly turn veg on arrival in India you won't stand any less chance of picking up a bug, and your system will have a huge shock that may confine you to the lavatory for days!

India Rail Catering - Standard of Non-Veg Food
Hi, I'd appreciate any feedback on the quality of India Rail catering, particularly the standard of the 'non-veg' food.

If you're going to buy the stuff to cook at home. Or even if only going to buy already cooked dishes from hotels to be served in home. Then I will advise you to invest in a microwave oven just for its germ killing efficiency. Heating any food for 2 minutes in a microwave will help a 'unhardened' gut. My 2 yen.

Always found the food on the Indian train system (veg/non veg)excelant and a good price .I might be as bold as to say ,better then British rail .Have you tried one of British Rails Breakfast Babs ,cardbourd!!!!!!!!!! Howe they get the food on the Indian trains i am not sure.May be one of those net things sticking out of the side of the train.A chapati catcher!!!!!

I don't think a domestic microwave will kill germs just with microwaves?
Food must be properly heated throughout to be safe, and 'warming' up is a great way to encourage bacteria.

Indian Rail Catering
Thanks for the responses - puts my mind more at ease. And yes, I can understand that it would not be difficult to improve on British Rail food!
