'Man Cholera'

When a man gets a cold in the UK - we say he has 'man-flu', as us chaps tend to complain bitterly about any illness.

Well I've got 'man-cholera'!

I swear I can generate lift as I go to the toilet - I can get a good two inches altitude off the loo seat.

No wonder India has such a well developed rocket programme!

Sorry .... must dash!

Cholera is extremely rare in westerners (as a Dutch professor in tropical medicine once lectured: you have to lie in the gutter in Indonesia and drink the sewage and even the you have less then 50 % chance of getting it). So make sure it's really cholera and not anything else.

Get well soon,

Hans

Sorry to hear.

If it really is cholera, then medical attention is needed urgently.

But, as the old saying goes, the runs by any other name would smell as bad, and whatever it is it doesn't sound like fun.

Don't forget the rehydration therapy stuff. Get well soon.

Thanks Hans ...... I'm sure it's just the usual viral gastro incident.

But good to know how difficult it is to catch cholera - there's some cases in Mumbai at the moment .... but whatever I have was picked up in Punjab on a work trip. First day off sick in over 10 years!

Thanks Nick - I'm on a diet of immodium and rehydration salts - should do the trick.

immodium may do the trick to suppress the runs, but does not deal with underlying cause.

Please, if it goes on for more than a couple of days, see your doctor.

48 hours is what The Rough Guide medical book for travellers advises for any of these types of illnesses - as nick says, if n-ot cleared up in that time get medical advice and start your antibiotics. I am just this morning reading the cholera episode in the Mumbai slums as described by Gregory David Roberts in Shantaram and it certainly 'puts the wind up you'! While I think a good clean out can do you good you don't want it to go on for a long time - so please get the meds. if you don't clear yourself up.

Get Fenugreek seeds from any provision store. Take about 10 gms of seed, pop them in your mouth and flush down your throat with water.
Do this morning and night for 3 or 4 days. You should be fine.

I do this every time my stomach starts acting up and it works like a charm.

I started feeling a bit dizzy - so followed the advice and went to the doc. Blood pressure was 80/70 ..... I don't think my blood was getting above neck level

All due to dehyration - it's not easy drinking enough fluids is it?

Anyway .... consultation and prescription was 60Rs. Even for India that seems very cheap? The local Doc seemed a bit surprised that a foreigner wandered in to her surgery - it's sponsored by the Rotary Club - do you think it's supposed to be a charity docs? They seemed very good - just a bit bemused by a ferangi? But it's right over the road from me - so I don't see the need to travel to some fancy surgery miles away?

Thats not exactly cheap, doctors in most middle class colonies charge in the same range..anywhere between Rs.40 - 100.

Infact if it requires basic medication like for common cold OR fever, they will give you required dosage for 2-3 days, either in the same charge OR a small extra amount..

was it a small clinic OR large one..?? if Rotary Club was sponsoring the same, they would not sponsor a small clinic or doctor, they would prefer larger setup...(I assume)..and that too not in a middle class or better area..they would do the same in slums OR poor areas..

However they have doctors who are member of Rotary club and they do attend the various camps organized by the club..its also a possibility club organizes their camp in that particular clinic...maybe once a week Or month...

I guess its good for you..as you have the doctor across the street and that can help you a lot if, God Forbid, you face any further problems..

Blood pressure 80/70 ??

Familyonthemove, is that 80 close to your normal systolic BP? (say 10 to 20 points?)

Else I think you should see a good doctor soon.
