Strangely 6 years after it's release Malarone seems to have precious little published articles on the downsides of the drug!!
This could be due to many factors, perhaps it is a malarial Prophylactic that works with few side effects. Or there is a suppresion of the facts about side effects. Or maybe in medical field research it is just too early to tell! India doesn't require Malorone or Larium, look at the WHO site for the recommended range of Prophylactics. Pretty much all of them have recognised side effect, the results of weighing the risks and introducing a low dose toxicity to your system!! This is the nature of protection against Malaria as it stands, inform yourself and make educated decisions!! happy Traveling ![]() |

Here is one study that shows less sideeffects with Malarone than with placebo!
Check table3: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic2/malarone_ad.htm |

i like to go through obsessions...

Malarone is the best and is the only one that is 98 percent effective (doxy and the other are only 93%, i think)
BUT IT IS SO EXPENSIVE!! 6 or 7 dollars a pill! and a pill every day that adds up to a hell of a lot ![]() |

I've taken every malaria med over the years with no side effects. Malarone's only downside, in my opinion, is the cost! Getting malaria med in India is a consideration. We usually just buy enough to get started with and get the rest from a chemist in India--cheaper
And as was pointed out, important to only take what's recommended for the area you will be in. Malaria is not the same everywhere--different resistant types from place to place in the world. And now I'm promoting (I have no financial interest in any of these products I just like them)...the latest mosie repellant approved by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) Lemon Eucalyptus which works as well as Deet and is less toxic. And products with picaridin in them, already used in Europe (Auten). AND a lightweight bed net from www.longroad.com I have the "skeeter defeater", very cool product if your staying in cheapo buggy places.I take malaria very seriously!! Obviously ![]() |

Malarone is considerably cheaper from Canada than the US. But, buy it fast as today's news indicates the Canadians have knuckled under and will impose restrictions on foren buyers. I use a net for convenience as well as prevention and second the light weight recommendation. Have had no luck with the "natural" repellants. This may be due to their track record of losing efficacy soon after manufacture. Consumer Reports research indicates Auten is not as effective as once hoped, sigh..

I just checked the CDC again and their success with Lemon Eyucalptus and Picaridin was based only on mosquitos that carry West Nile Virus (it was as good as Deet, lasted about 8 hours) and NOT on malaria carrying mosquitos. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/west...entUpdates.htm
Too bad....I was hoping it was proven for anophales mosquitos also. Guess I'll still be bringing my Deet. BUT maybe soon it will also be shown to be good on all mosquitos. I also would never use "natural" herbal products without some good backup data....malaria is way too serious to mess around with ![]() |

My guru says, "The best malaria preventative is, don't get bit by mosquitos."
There are many alternative preventative measures that become travel rituals to prevent being bitten by mosquitos, without resorting to the shots that make many sick. For example, mossie coils, the electric blue things, bug lotion. Malaria many kill you, but hey, there are 571365495 other ways to die in India, so I don't even get the malaria shots. (I have had an aquantance die of malaria so I'm not being flippant, well not much...)

I've taken malarone (no problem). I've never taken doxycycline. I've also taken nothing at all since certain areas and seasons are mosquito free. I'm almost certain we took Larium the last time we were in Chennai before Malarone was available. It was in Dec. & Jan. Hope this isn't more confusing. If so, ignore me and go with what the literature says. ![]() More from your excellent link....says malaria is a year round problem. http://www.mdtravelhealth.com/destin...sia/india.html Last edited by camelgirl : Jun 27th, 2005 at 04:24.
