Malarone side effects

Hey,

I took Malarone for a few days in Northern Thailand and have been prescribed it again for India. When I took it before my friend and I got really bad kanker (sp.?) sores (mouth sores). Did anyone else get that when taking it? It was one of the listed side effects. I remember they were so painful it was hard to eat.

Hi Jennyg,

I've been taking Malarone as well as my wife, son and sometimes friends too, with no side effects at all. For short periods is not giving any problems to the users. May be the reason was not Malarone.

Good luck

yeah we thought that too. But the thing is we were both taking it and we both had mouth sores. Unless it was something from our trek in Thailand?? I don't know what it could be though. oh well hopefully I don't get them this time.

There are other options for India if you are worried about it.

There is nothing without side effects to some people. Try something else to see if it is more compatible. I liked doxy although I was sun sensitive at first. No Larium for me as I am crazy enough without an LSD trip..

Mouth sores? Sounds like herpes to me...
Seriously though, how bad can malaria be? Just skip the medication. Apparently if the mosquito wears a condom you can't get it anyway…

It can kill you. Is that bad enough for you?

The U S Centers for Disease Control recommend mefloquine hydrochloride, marketed as Lariam, for the strain of malaria most common in India. I've taken it for seven trips -- India, South America, and Africa -- with the only side-effect being more and more vivid dreams. Some people, however, report nightmares, diarrhoea, and light-sensitivity.

It was NOT herpes thank you very much. We had them for the 3 days we took it and then as soon as we stopped they went away. so it was obviously the Malarone, also since it was one of the listed side effects. I am going to take them anyways. I was just wondering if anyone else had that side effect that took Malarone longer than 3 days and if it went away. Maybe it won't happen this time.

Sorry I have Flipentism...I caught it from a clown in Mexico. Now I can't post serious comments on forums....IT'S A DISEASE! And I’m very sensitive about it. So maybe you won’t be so patronising in future

(PS...Malaria kills...no shit?)
Also, one of the symptoms of Flipentism is an extreme chronic sarcasm...watch out for clowns who are foaming at the mouth, people

On a serious note, my brothers both took mefloquine hydrochloride in Peru and neither of them had bad experiences. i think it may have had a different trade name here though.

Since I was planning to take Malarone myself, I performed a quick search through some medical databases:

Quote:
The safety of atovaquone/proguanil in long-term malaria prophylaxis of nonimmune adults.

Petersen E.

Department of Gastrointestinal and Parasitic Diseases, World Health Organization, National Malaria Diagnostic Reference Center, Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Data on the long-term safety of atovaquone/proguanil in nonimmune travelers are limited. METHODS: An open-label study, involving 300 Danish soldiers stationed in Eritrea for 6 months was initiated. The subjects self-reported their symptoms on a post-travel questionnaire. The study compared the symptoms of compliers and noncompliers. RESULTS: No serious adverse events occurred. Diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, cough, and loss of appetite were the most common symptoms reported. No case of Plasmodium falciparum malaria occurred. CONCLUSIONS: Atovaquone/proguanil was safe and well tolerated in this group of long-term nonimmune travelers.
There is one (and I should stress there's only this one case so far) slightly more worrying Malarone related case though:

what do you mean? your skin became very sensitive i.e. spots or something different?
Because I suffered the heat so much (i.e. dizzines, very low blood pressure...) when I was in India and taking Malarone, although I had been to hotter places before, and didn't suffer so much before.

Ciao

sun sensitive means that you are more susceptible to the effects of the sun - that is, you are far more likely to get sunburnt.
after doing some research on larium and doxocycline (a tetracylic antiobiotic) i went for doxocycline. and lots of tropical strength insect repellent.
malaria is serious, one million people die each year from it. side effects from medication can also be serious, so do some research and choose the one you think suits you best.

I suffer from Flipentism too; you'll find many a daft post from me on serious subjects around here. But please give people a chance to get to know you before you expect them to know when you don't mean what you say! Welcome to IM. As well as a wealth of knowledge on India you'll find people here with many and varied senses of humour that somehow blend together to make IM a great place
