Malarone Not Effective In Goa????

I was just reading another travel forum and somebody made a statement that Malarone is not effective in Goa..I didn't bother to call the travel clinic, as we were just in India a few months ago and assumed that Malarone was effective throughout India..

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?..I will call the travel clinic after the weekend when it is open again...

Doesn't sound right. I'd want more confirmation from a qualified medical person before worrying too much.

My sister's dog walker's grocer's accountant's wife's bartender's bottle picker's doorman's repairman once told me that malaraone is not effective in Goa, but immediately beyond Goa's border, it is effective.

Is that true?

That is a rather snide remark!!

Obviously you are not aware that there are certain anti-malarial med's that are good in some areas of the world but not in others....

Apparently, this person was told by a traveller's clinic...Anyhow, it is probably untrue, but i will check with the Traveller's clinic on Monday, just to be sure...

Not sure what you should be doing for your self but think about what you are doing for the place you visit - I have long been a bit bemused by this type of thread and read this today

Do any Indians or semi-permanent residents take anything?

I didn't read anything on g's site that indicated such for travellers. Residents are in a bind because of long term effects of drugs. All I can do is pray that they have some degree of immunity. My area is rather bad for it but I was the only one to run out of luck and that too on a short trip..

No, they don't and neither do we. I did take doxy during the last monsoon though.
There are cases in Goa but not widespread.

I am not trying to argue for or against medication, but running on the same logic of the above argument:
"Do people in the continent of Africa use condoms when having casual sex?"
"Do locals buy purified bottle water or drink straight out of the tap?"
No, they don't and neither do we.

I will be in the north, and my dr. said it was good for that area, just don't take the chloroquine.

Malarone is fine for the Indian Subcontinent. But it is expensive and a daily med. Mefloquine is much cheaper and a once/week med, which is also easier on your system. Doxocycline is cheapest, but a daily med, and can be hard on your system, including yeast infections.

Thought this was a dead thread. But, I needed to correct something, Mefloquine (Larium) is not easier on your system if you suffer its famous mental side effects. The convenience of taking it once a week may not be worth the risk having an LSD type trip..

I don't seem to be one of those. I've taken the once/a week ones before. I assume it was Mefloquine. No problem. We started this series last Tuesday. This is Friday. Don't notice any difference. Didn't know that could be a side effect.

And yes, it was a dead thread. I just didn't notice the time line on it.
