Malaria Tabs

Hi,

Just ben the docs and they have recomended Chloroquine / Proguanil to me for India. I take it you have to take both of these and not just one or the other ?

I know this is an India forum but does anyone know if you can get these in Turkey (cheaper than the uk?) or should I just get at home.

Thanks.

you have to take both.

Well, you don't have to. I take just chloroquine (when I remember ) on the basis that a local doctor told me that was good enough for my patch of India.

But it is usually recommended as a combination. Bear in mind you have to start the course before arriving in a risk area (I forget how long before).

Lez, chloroquine is easily available here, but other posters in other threads have indicated that Proguanil is very hard to find.

Proguanil is available at the bigger pharmacies (it is manufactured by Unicure Remedies Pvt Ltd in India under the name "Laveran" - I believe Laveran discovered the malaria parasite in the 19th century). By Indian standards its not cheap - Retail price Rs 450 for 100 tablets, but still a fair bit cheaper than here (UK)

We leave for India in 3 weeks and 4 days. I've been so busy thinking about everything else that I hadn't thought of the health factors until now. I'm going to walk to the drug store today on my lunch break and buy everything... or at least one thing. Thanks for the advice.

Any idea if Malarone is available out there? This is the one I've been told I need by the docs. It's around EUR 4 here for one!
