Mosquito repellent works OK if it contains DEET, any ayurvedic substitutes for this that maybe need to be applied more often, but are also effective? Thanks in advance ![]() |

Cure for Malaria
If by some misfortune you get malaria there is a cure:
Coartem and you can obtain this in India for $3 to $8 per dose. You will need 6 doses at 0hr,8hr,24hr,36hr,48hr, 60hr. In Africa, the drug costs 50 cents, still too high for the general population. I'm not certain of the side effects, but the cure rate is 97%. ![]() |

I'm going to Mumbai, and traveling down to Indore. After spending a week in Indore I'm going up to Deradun for 2 months. Is it nessesary to take malaria tablets, or can I get away with it. I leave on friday and I need to know if I must take pills or not. I just don't want to take the pills, and feel sick and not have a huge risk of getting Malaria.

If you will be lower than 2000 feet, you should definitely consider anti-malarials.

from everything i've read..... and its pages and pages... i hear a BIG warning of NOT taking the tablets (because of reports of untreated malaria) .. and yes, people DYING.
however, many people are going for the 'prevention' is best and VERY early treatment... so find out the symptoms (flu like 'they' say) AT LEAST if you are not taking the tablets.. and be super vigilent in prevention ... (i'm sure vigilent is spelt wrong.. sorry about that) |

I took malaria tablets before going to Thailand years ago and felt so sick I stopped taking them. I'm worried about spending 5 weeks in India feeling like I have constant morning sickness. I wish I could remember which ones they were... Also, my partner suffers periodically from depression and mood swings, so I worry about that side effect as well. I think this is my biggest dilemna of the whole trip and I really don't know what to do!
BTW the tablets here in Aus are $1.50/tablet - that's for 3 of us for 10 weeks!!!!! Not that that's an issue if it keeps us safe. |

Talk with your travel clinic. Doxycycline shouldn't give you those symptoms... and is very inexpensive

So then its 6 weeks of thrush rather than morning sickness!!!! I just found out today how expensive the shots are too - we are seriously spending more money preparing for this trip than we will when we are there - luggage, shots, passport renewals, visas, malaria tablets, medicine to take with us, travel insurance.. none of which I factored into the budget of course, well only in a vague kind of way! Oh well, sorry, just needed to get that off my chest & have a little rant.. sorry about the thread hijack!
