Malaria tablets necessary for Tamil Nadu?

Hi all; I know that there are a lot of threads and posts about malaria and its prevention in this forum, and I have read several of them, but however I would like to present my particular case asking for the opinions of more expert travellers.
I will leave in mid-August till the first week of September; my itinerary will be fucused on Tamil Nadu (Chennai, Mamallapuram, Trichy, Thanjavur, Madurai, Rameswaram, etc.), with few days to be spent in an orphanage in a small village, with an extension to 3-4 days in Varanasi and the last one in Delhi.
I will use always public transportation (trains and buses), moving alone with my wife (no organized group), eating in small local restaurants and sleeping in mid-level small hotels.
Planning a trip with these characteristics, how do I REALLY need malaria tablets? I have already bought the necessary Malaron tablets, but I would like to avoid them if not strictly necessary.
Could anyone help?
Thanks: Gianni

At this time of year many of the places you plan to visit will have seen quite a bit of rain!! Rain means more mozzies, which in turn makes for a bigger chance of being infected with the EVER PRESENT Malaria parasite!!

Let's just say that when I was in TN last September, I was using anti-itch creme for a body lotion I was so bit up, but it's your choice. I use Malarone, by the way, with no side effects whatsoever. Of course you can always use repellant, but those TN mosquitos still bite. They bit me through my clothes.
