Can anyone explain how they prevent the Malarial parasites from multiplying in you sytem without getting too technical? Like do they alter the PH of your blood or something?

Great question and this site has a reasonable discussion of it..

Thanks for the information and the link. Most of the articles, pertain to Lariam being taken for an extended time period ie. troops overseas.

I am going for 4 weeks. Will taking this for 8 weeks lead to any of these affects? I would think each person would act differently.

Has anyone taken LARIAM with well toleration?

Great link - not to technical either!

Ndhillon: It says in the above article that symptoms start to occur within the first three doses of lariam. I felt pretty sick first one I took and decided against taking them .... but was only staying in 5 star hotels ... thus had little risk.

edwardseco: It seems to me that Doxycycline may have less side effects because it is absorbed by the liver . In the long run or for a long term stay this may mean possible health trouble down the road. Anybody got any thoughts on that?

According to the article from the above link:

The fact remains, however, that most travelers tolerate the weekly dosage of mefloquine quite well. If anything, they have only a few mild gastrointestinal side effects, some slight dizziness and an occasional vivid dream. In multiple clinical trials, rates of serious neuropsychiatric problems have not been found to be significantly higher with prophylactic dosages of mefloquine than with alternative agents.11 Thus, despite some problems, mefloquine remains more convenient and effective than other available therapies suitable for use in areas where Plasmodium species are resistant to chloroquine.

I don't know any one who has taken Doxy for more than a year. It was great for me and my brood. I knoe of many people who tolerate and appreciate the convenience of Lariam (mefloquine). However, I know of many bad reactions as well so it isn't for me. I am crazy enough as it is (married). Each one has to be thoughtfully evaluated on a cost-benefit approach..

Wink YOu need Proguanil and Chloroquine tablets

Email me on Will.Jelbert@reuters.com, i have a lot of new boxes left over from my 9 months in India that have just come to an end ,. they are in boxed new condition from boots costing £19 each , each containing 7 weeks . I will let you have as many boxes as you need for only £14 a box . I can send pics if you like. By the way i went to those places and all are great , though Varanasi is a real shock to the system. Prepare for extremes.

I just got back from northern India where I had an extra large mosquito coil going all night long - the mosquitos were CRAZY. I was very happy to be taking malaria pills. I suggest contacting the Tropeninstitut in Tuebingen - they gave me the most thorough travel advice while I was living in Germany. I took Lariam and had no problems....good luck!

By the way I took Lariam before my trip, for 6 weeks in Africa and then for some amount of time after I got home - no problems whatsoever.

Dry Eddie,

Any German Tropen-Institute will do the job - I went to the one in Tuebingen, I think you can also just call them and they will send all the info you need. They are very good at what they do. If you live in Germany....

One last thing - I took Malorone and didn't mind paying more because I had to take it for only one week after I returned instead of the regular 4 weeks. The fewer pills the better, I figured, and this may offset the cost.
