It is most advisable to take maleria tablets before you travel to India. Start taking tables 1 week before your travel plan. You will need to take only 1/week while you are in India and then it is advisble to continue taking it after you come back for two weeks. You can purchase some from Inida from any pharmacy.
Have A nice trip and FUN... India Great Land.. |

btw The factor of "the north" here doesn't mean anything; malaria is said not to occur above an altitude of X thousand meters which is not where you'll be heading mostly.

don't take malaria tablets. If you get malaria you will need a medical treatment anyway... I just felt really bad with malarone and quit after 1 week. Just enjoy India...
If you're looking for a nice accomodation in Varanasi try "Shanti guesthouse" ![]() |

doxycycline
It's been mentioned before but bears repeating. Doxycycline 100mg is an effective and cheap anti-malaria remedy. My pharmacist wife has us on it every trip. We start 3 - 4 days before, evewry day of the trip, and 3 weeks after. Double check with your pharmacist when you fill the prescription.

malaria
I've been doing internet searches on malaria in preparation for my second time living in India. the canadian government if very pro-mefloquine, while Japan, where I am now, is not. there's an excellent online report about malaria
http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/publicat/...0s1/index.html India is a place where malaria is resistant to chloroquine. There's a reference in the document about malaria not being a problem if you're high in the mountains. The report also says that there's no global concensus about malaria drugs. some countries think that you shouldn't take any drugs until you get malaria, and then you get treated by large does of antimalarial drugs. Canadian scientists point out that malaria goes very quickly from nothing to death (36-48 hours). the short time before things could get very bad, especially as some people might not think about malaria at first, means that it's smarter to take preventative drugs. I took mefloquine for one year the first time and I'm probably going to get the japanese doctors to supply me with 6 months worth for this second trip. read the documment, it's excellent info! have a great trip |

I guess I am the other way. I stayed for several years without taking anything as I was too busy. Then on a short trip, luck ran out..

If they don't make you sick though there's no reason not to take them. Rather that then come home and head straight to hospital.
They don't make me sick at all so I've been taking them for 4 months. |

Remember that tablets don't stop you being bitten, and even if you are bitten it doesn't mean you're going to get malaria. The tablets only make the malaria milder if you are unfortunate enough to be bitten by a carrier in the first place,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

There are so many different types of pills out there. The one I will be taking is doxycycline. Never taken it before though. Also, peopel say they get sick when they take certain pills? What kind of sickness are you referring to?
