malaria

Last year we went to Darjeeling. My husband and I didnt buy any malarone as it is so expensive. My daughter on the otherhand is 16 and double zero size so I dont want to give her any heavy tablets and I belive malarone are the best. Does anybody want to sell some if they have any over, or do we need it in South India as much as dARJEELING.I hitch throughout India in 1971 without anythin AND eat everywhere,, never got the runs once or belly ache and gave blood for money to live on.Even shared a banana with a leper. Never caught leperousy though. It seems nowadays we take so many precautions we actually weaken ourselves and invite bugs to join us. Jackie

Hi Jackie

I went to India for 3 months with my (then) 3 & 5 year old daughters.

After reading a lot about it, I decided not to get anything prophylactically for malaria, just avoid getting bitten and hope for the best. My rationale was based on the fact that we were going for so long and would end up taking the drugs (which can have serious side-effects, no matter which type you take) for about six months!!

We weren't going jungle-trekking, so I felt safe enough just being careful and knowing that we were near good hospitals/medical care if it ever came to that. Thankfully, it didn't.

I discussed my situation with a tropical medicine doctor here in Ireland before I left and he agreed with me. If we'd just been going for a fortnight, I might have considered anti-malarials. How long you intend to go for might influence your decision.

HTH

I would have reversed that judgement. Still, on a relatively short trip I caught it..

I am 55, skinny as a rake and have little or no muscle. I can still manage to carry a bottle of tablets.

Moderator Note

Please don't start any new threads on malaria. There is probably more information and disagreement on this topic on the board that anything else. Please...

1. Go and read it.

2. Go and talk to your doctor.
