Hi,
I have a "common" question about malaria. My friends and I are flying to India on friday, going to Delhi, Agra,Mumbai and Goa. And I am not taking any pills like larinam, because of some medical reasons. I must say I am quite scared about that? Has anybody been to this places and did not take larinam. How high is the risk for me of getting malaria in the cities of India and Goa? Thanks for the answers Anita |

You don't need to take Larium, but you should take some kind of malaria prophylaxis. In the UK the commonly recommended malaria tablets for India are Chloroquine/Proguanil. These are widely used and most people have few if any side effects. The only problem is that you're meant to start taking them a week before you go! I would certainly advise taking something - especially since you're travelling during the monsoon when I think the mosquitos are at their worst. Mind you, I know others here don't always take medication so they might advise differently. Of course you should certainly try to avoid getting bitten in the first place - wear light coloured clothing that covers as much of you as possible, use insect repellent etc.
I don't know if malarone is suitable for India but I know you only need to take that while you're in the malarious region and not before/after your trip so it might suit you better. |

I am planning a trip to India in October and like you I am not planning to take Malaria medication (especially Larium; made me ill last time). However I have been told (and I would appreciate confirmation or criticism of this idea) that Vitamin(s) B is obnoxious to Mosquitoes. Apparently when you take Vitamin B etc. you effectively sweat vitamin B which Mossies cant stand the smell of. If this snippet of info is correct then Vitamin B combined with a bottle of Indian Tonic water plus insect repellant will hopefully do the trick. Any criticism or praise for the idea would be appreciated.

If you type 'vitamin B, mosquitos' on your favorite search engine, (I used Yahoo), you'll find lot's of conflicting opinions on the subject.

It only takes one bite of a malaria-bearing mosquito, you know.
If you can't take Larium, then maybe you can take Doxycycline, which has very few side effects for most people and will protect you. Also be sure to take good DEET-containing mossie repellant and USE IT! And at night, turn the fan on HIGH and sleep under it -- so the mossies can't land on you. I think that not protecting yourself against malaria (and the other diseases for which you can be innoculated) is foolish, but then, I did have a friend die of malaria one year. How much is your life worth?

As far as I know, last medicine against malaria is "Riamet" manufactured by multinational Novartis.. It seems the main active ingredient cames from a chinesse plant called artemisina and for this reason (natural product), can't be registered/patented.
In Africa the proofs have been really astonishing, and in the region of Mkuze near the border between Swaziland and Mozambique the disease went down 95% . Novartis supplies the product there at a cost price of 2 US $ And last of all prize is very cheap even in Europe compared with Malarone. You can have a look in the web: http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines...eparations.asp Jorge |

70's hippy is right about the test results for vitamin B. I suupose faith makes people happier despite the risks. The preliminary results for this "new" drug (wormwood) were in the Wall Street Journal and it looks very promising. The problem is that malaria is like AIDS. It undergoes continious evolution. Still, its relatively cheap and may help for at least a while. DDT use is getting to be widespread as an alternative..
