Malaria

For those of you who are thinking not to take Malaria tablets - think again! One of the lads I have known for years had Malaria in August and was very poorly. My bloke now has it and has been in hospital for 6 days, very poorly - both live and work in Goa!!!!

There are lots of Mozzies this year and I was bitten loads when I was there (been back 2 weeks) - I took tablets from over there and am touching wood!

Advice Regarding Treatment if Malaria-like Febrile symptoms occur while traveling:
Emergency ('standby') presumptive self-treatment is a recognised resource for individuals who may be exposed to malaria and for whom medical attention cannot be provided within 24 hours. Such people are advised beforehand to carry medication for self-tratment if they develop fever or flu-like symptoms. However, it is imperative that medical follow-up be sought promptly.

Sad news I hope your boy friend makes a speedy and full recovery!!

This is a wake up call for people coming to a travel forum as medical practicioners and making pronouncements, belittling the risk of Malaria and the existance of the parasite carrying mozzies. The reality is VERY different!!

Don't solely use advice on a travel forum to prepare for Malaria and other medical matters go and talk to a doctor and and get a professional opinion!!

I wonder if we should move this thread to the health section?

Too many people belittle the risk: it is sobering to hear that you know two recent cases.

Of course, living in the area increases the exposure greatly, but still...

Hi everyone

I have been a reading follower for this forum for a few months now and I must say its one of the best if not the best for info on India.

So I joined now because I am going to GOA next month with my kids who are 12 and 14 years old. And the problem is that the health department have started to send out warnings about going to GOA since 2 Swedes have been infected by Malaria in the last few weeks. They also mention to Germans and a Danish person.

http://www.smittskyddsinstitutet.se/...-i-goa-indien/

The link is in Swedish but it says that the Malaria is Plasmodium falciparum and its the dangerous kind where the malaria tablets don´t help.

So what do I do? Does anyone have more information on this. Is there special areas that are more risky than others. Any information and advice would be greatly appreciated.

So I am looking for advice. Does somebody know anything more about this? Are there places in GOA that are more risky than others?

Our trip is planned like this: we go to Galangute and stay at Ticlos resort. We then will go south to Palolem for a few days and stay in a beach hut. We also want to go north for a few days but we haven’t decided exactly where.

They also mentioned in the news that the reason for the malaria mosquitoes in GOA are because of the global weather changes and that is have been more rain than usual in GOA in December.

So I hope to get some advice because now we are worried and sad

We will be away for 3 weeks and it was not easy to get this vacation allowed from my children's school so I can´t rebook the trip and go some other time. My options are to cancel or change destination. But we really want to go to GOA.

People just need to start taking their tablets. I was given Lariam, I take it once a week, and that's it. Easy-peasy.

malaria

Prevention is the main key. So prevent being bitten by using insect repellent (DEET), mosquito coils or the electrical "Good Knight" gizmo.

Reliable info is available on the WHO website (www.who.int). Here's the link to the malaria info:
http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publication...0364_chap7.pdf

The Netherlands government advice for India (with the exceptionof the northeast) is paludrine (200 mg proguanil for adults and kids above 40 kg per day).

Do consult an travel health center / doctor in your own country before taking any profylaxis.

Have fun!

Hans

Malarone is effective against "Plasmodium falciparum" according to the leaflet that came with my Malarone tablets.

I also suspect that other anti-malerials are also effective, but in some area's the mozzi's are becoming resistant to Chloroquine.

Speak to your Doctor or Local Travel Clinic for the latest information and which to use and the side effects.

...As, I think, are a number of other anti-malarials.

That's why you have to tell the doc or the pharmacy where you are going, to get the right one.

Take the right one(s), according to the instructions, use repellent etc etc and stop worrying!

Have a good trip.

Oh, and welcome to IndiaMike

There are not many around here at the moment. Some places are worse than others. For 3 weeks, take the drugs, it's not worth the risk for you. Use plenty of repellent.
