Maria, this is ome of IndiaMike's favourit topics.
Search and browse; you will find plenty of information and more opinions. I'm afraid you may end up even more confused! Don't look here for authorative medical advice, though. If you want that, go to a specialist in tropical medicine, not an internet travel forum. But you will find plenty to interest you on Malaria and lots of other India travel subjects

Malaria is one of the world's biggest killer diseases. It is not something to be taken lightly. EVen the non-lethal malaria is a very nasty recurring desease. The fact that modern drugs are better at controling it these days doesn't make it a disease, like flu, to be thought lightly of. (of course, even flu kills, and many people are taking their annual flu vacine these days).
The fact of having been to India, or even (as I do) living here) does not make one any expert on the subject! I've probably read all the Indiamike Maleria threads over the last year or two: all I can say is that I took my doctor's advice. There are parts of India (especially above a certain altitude) where there is no malaria. If you post your itinary, then someone who knows more than I do may offer pointers as to the danger levels you may experience. |

An alert?
I never heard of a malaria alert here. I just heard of people sufferring from malaria. If one follows the news in a particular city one can gather, eg in Chennai there is greater danger in the Northern part of the city. That doesn't mean there is no danger here in the South of the city. One of the problems is that local politicians like to give the impression that they have dealt with the malaria problem, which they have not. Another problem is that it is old news. A few people catching malaria every day is not going to make the newspapers. Something new, like Chikungunya (another Mossie-born disease) is in the papers regularly! Be safe: unless you are heading for mountains or, maybe, a very dry place, expect malaria to be there. |
