Malaria prophylaxis for Orissa?

I'll be travelling to Orissa for 2 weeks at the end of december.
We'll make a tour through tribal areas and visit puri, konark, bhubaneshwar.
What about Malaria at this time? Hope, you have some tips for me.

Malaria is present all the time in India and Orissa has suffered rather badly in recent years from outbreaks of the parasite.

Take the measures you feel most comfottable with to avoid being infected.

If you are going only for two weeks, then I would say thay you should DEFINITELY take malaria meds.

You are right to think that December is less of a risk than other months, but the risk is always there and especially in the tribal areas.

Protect yourselves from mosquitoes at all times. Filaria and Chikungunya are some of the other nasty diseases that you do not want to get.

Thanks a lot for your postings, so I'll talk to my doctor, which pills he suggests.

How to protect against Filaria? Take care of food...

How high is the risk right now in Madras?
I'm heading there on November 10th with my son. We have had the injections and will start the oral 2 days prior and on.
What do you know.
Also, does anyone if the monsoon is bad enough now in Madras to postpone our trave.

Thanks in advance for responding.

So did I... maybe he's confusing it with something else?

Monsoon in Madras... It was pretty bad yesterday. I posted this on the shoutbox:
Quote:
Dramatic changes since my last post... now flooded here. People (house owners) downstairs are mopping out. Outhouse tenant has inches of water on the floor, daughter is there by herself but can't let anyone in to help as the water will come in like wave as soon as door is open. For myself, I love this sort of weather, and I live on the first floor --- but a lot of people are going to be suffering here tonight. The water level here is just a bit higher than it was during the worst storm I saw here last year
<Later> Just saw the figures on Chennai Met Dept site for yesterday. Central Chennai: 188.8mm. That's about 7 1/2 inches in American money. Most of that fell in just a few hours...
There was about 18 inches to 2 feet of water in my street. Last thing I heard was that it was supposed to be all over by Wednesday. Forecasts and the weather are changing here at the drop of a hat.

No... don't postpone. The whole weather picture is likely to have changed in 10 days time.

The mossies are being kept down by the rain and the relatively cooler weather, but they will probably be breeding like crazy in the left-over water when it stops. There is malaria here, but I don't think I would call it High Risk (high enough to take the meds) --- other's comments?

Nick H,

Thank you so much for this information. Is shoutbox part of this site, or a different one? I'm new to this. So are you right in Madras?

Thanks
Again

You're right, I've had all the other injections but not one for malaria. Just the malarone on tap.

If we're traveling a few hours outside of the city is it likely the roads and weather will be worse. I know you can't tell with the weather but I'm concerned about the rural road conditions.

Thanks again

The 'Shoutbox' is a seldom-used corner of Indiamike that you can access by clicking on 'Shoutbox' in the left-column menu on the front page. It works as a general chat system --- but it is often deadly quiet in there!

Am I right in Madras? Well, I'm right about the weather just now but my forcasting is not too good . And I'm wrong about heaps of other things

I think that was a 2.00am attempt at a joke: I'd better go to bed!

...Yes, I'm in Madras, more lately known as Chennai, not far from Mylapore, so fairly central

Okay, I will check out shoutbox, and yes you better go to bed.
How come they get to rename a place? I know that it is now called Chennai, but I like Madras.

I will be checking in with you as the days progress to see how the monsoon is effecting the area. I haven't figured out how to post my own question yet, that's why I piggy backed on this post.

Thanks

There are two reasons for renaming... One is to put aside the marks of colonialism (and, lets face it, us Brits can't pronounce anything 'foreign' and love to come up with our own versions ). I can see some validity in this.

The other is to satisfy the ego of politicians.

The origins of the name 'Madras' are not entirely certain, but it is argued that it is (in terms of the area's original villages) just as old as 'Chennai'. Many, many locals and ex-pat Madrasees still prefer to use that name.

The wholesale renaming of our streets would seem to come under the politician-ego heading. Though I can understand the wish not to be lumbered with street names that glorify some Brit from the past, I can see no point in renaming eg Royapettah High Road --- so that noone would know where it is any longer.

Lots of arguments either way, here: there is a thread about it somewhere.....

PS... look at the forum listings (click forums on the front page), chose appropriate forum, click New Thread button --- is how to start your own thread

Thanks for the info on starting a new thread.
The name change history/background is interesting on Madras. Wow, renaming streets, don't you then have to reprint all the area maps. I would be lost for sure.
I started a seperate thread on Madras/Chennai.

Mosquito control is very important in Orissa, at any time of the year. I've been there in November, December and January, and there are always mosquitos.... besides malaria, they carry dengue fever, filaria, and chikingunya, and believe me, you don't want to get any of those!

Take DEET with you, sleep under mosquito nets and keep the overhead fan ON all night -- and sleep covered, even with only a sarong. Burn mosquito coils in a closed room while you're out to dinner -- I was amazed at how many dead mossies I'd find when I got back to the hotel in Puri.

Mosquitos that bite in the daytime carry dengue, so you'll want to use the DEET several times a day.
