Helo,
im going for the Noveber trip south of Mumbai and i am thinking if should i take any meds to India.Or should i buy it in India. One friend told me that it is the best to go to the doctor before leaving India and make medical tests as in Europe doctors may not know many Indian diseases. what do u think? |

No.
There is no protection against Dengue: no vaccine, and no treatment, other than symptomatic. Same goes for quite a few viral diseases, eg common cold.

But, should you get sick after returning you must tell the doc you spent time in India, and make sure they take it seriously. Anyway, there's a good chance of seeing an Indian doc in Europe! |

...the one that works for you!
Which you will only discover by trial and error. DEET generally tops the recommendation lists. You can bring it with you, or buy Ododmos in Indian supermarkets or pharmacies. |

Do I need malaria meds in Sikkim?
Here's a question for the all knowing IM-ers.....
Do you think I need Malaria meds in Sikkim at the end of November/Early December? I have a Malarone prescription...but it's madly expensive and I'm now being told I won't need it at that altitude. What do you folks think? |

We'll be in Gangtok....my problem is that I only got a prescription for 20 pills and if we'll be gone 24 days, plus you are supposed to take them for a week after....
I'll definitely need to look into the Doxy - thanks! |

I asked my doctor for Chloroquine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chloroquine but he also prescribed me proguanil...I'm just thinking about the necessity of proguanil...I'll be in Delhi-Agra-Jaipur in July.

well i think i may go the doxy route if i do anything. i just feel if i'm going to take the necessary precautions anyway (deet, coils, plugins, long sleeves/pants) why put this stuff into my body.
anwyay, i'm guessing it's a once a day tablet (seen a few sites on it). Anyone know the "official" protocol for malaria prevention with doxycycline? I'll start it upon arrival in Delhi...(that is, this sunday) thanks. |

Doxycycline :- Dose for Adults – ONE DAILY – At least two days before entering a malarious area, during and for four weeks on leaving.
Note :- May sensitise the skin to sunlight and interfere with the metabolism of oral contraceptives. Extra contraceptive precautions should be taken for first three weeks of use.

I use Malarone whenever I travel nowadays. It's expensive but works for me without any side effects.
The first time I travelled to a malaria-affected area I took mefloquine (Lariam), tempted by the easy once-a-week regime. I had read all about its potential side effects but thought that I was strong and confident enough to use it without problems. How wrong could I be! The vivid, psychedelic dreams began immediately, and I loved it. But as time went on I began feeling increasingly anxious and scared, culminating, about a month after I got back home, in having to call an ambulance in the middle of the night for the first anxiety attack I'd ever had in my life. I had several more anxiety attacks in the following months, and was constantly aware of something "not quite right" in my head; there was something really nasty there that hadn't been there before. It was two years before I felt normal again; it was the worst drug-related experience of my life (and I've had a few). I can quite see why some people have nervous breakdowns or commit suicide while on that drug. |
