getting bit through your clothes? I've read that many times on here. That sounds really viscious. Would it help to wear slightly looser clothing?
Also, DEET is no help huh? Those are some strong mosquitos!

What about Malarone? Anyone had experience with this one? I hear it's pretty pricey to buy in Aus - do you know if I can pick it up in India, like you can with Doxi? Ta

I'm originally from Minnesota and spent much of my youth in the lakes, swamps, and forests of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Mosquitos are thick there in the summer but they never bothered me much (I rarely used repellant, and only used mosquito netting in June and the first half of July). In India on the other hand, every mosquito withing a km seems to find me. If there is one mosquito in the house, it will bite me. Very strange. Do Indian mosquitos enjoy "exotic foreign blood"?

My wife and I are both nurses and we would only take doxycycline. Unless you like weird dreams Also use deet and a net. Already stocked up for our trip on Saturday!

You can get a lot of information from the net, but there is no substitute for professional advice. Malaria is a serious disease.

Hi Ixel,
The best thing to do if you have time is go to your doctor and he will prescribe tablets for you. Alternatively doxycycline (a type of antibiotic) or proguinal/chloroquine and also malarone are the three main types of malaria prophylaxis. You will probably be able to buy any of these without a script in India but I can not be certain or maybe at home in your own pharmacy this is not available in the UK without a doctor's perscription. I would recommend you take some type of protection malaria can be contacted from even one bite and can be fatal!!.It is recommended that you start taking tablets one a day if possible 3/4 days before entering malaria areas and each day of staying in infected area and for 4 weeks after leaving infected area. If you do not manage to get medication remember to cover up with long light colour clothes at dusk and dawn, always use an insect repellent with DEET included and if you feel unwell at any point of your trip seek medical attention. Malaria can be treated if caught early. Hope this helps and dont let it scare you too much!! just be sensible and enjoy your trip. Sarah and Steve ![]() |

ixel; I've noticed that you have been asking some very basic questions, and obviously have a trip booked.
Don't worry about the questions, you're welcome --- but I do recommend you to see one of the major guide books and carefuly read the first few 'general' chapters on health, including malaria and vaccinations, precautions, climate, etc etc. You should do this well in advance of your trip. What precautions a person takes is their personal decision, but this is no country to come to without knowledge of the risks involved. |

Actually, I'm almost with one foot in India and still in the investigation process, but for what I see I've all I need for quickly jump into the experience safely... a friend I'm traveling with will have today some pills for the malaria thing. Much Love and Joy !!! Ixel ;-D) |
