Malaria in Rajasthan
Next week I am off to India for one month. I have finally decided that after a couple of days in Dehli I will spend most of my time in Rajasthan before moving through to Agra, Varanasi and finally Calcutta. I have anti malarials, but the advice my nurse gave me was really confusing. I have taken anti malarials before and had some side effects I would rather avoid again if there is low malaria risk in the places I am going to?

Check my favourite malaria publication, which comes from the British Heath Service. You can download it -->here .
Don't forget to check their site for updates, though. There is malaria, and mosquitoes, everywhere in India below a certain altitude, which means some risk unless you are in the hills. Only parts of India are rated as High Risk, though. Check out that booklet, it will tell you what the nurse was probably trying to tell! |

I ain't no expert - but I think you have to have decent amounts of wet to have a chance of mosquitos that carry malaria. I wouldn't worry too much about it in Rajasthan.
http://www.nvbdcp.gov.in/Doc/Malaria%20Situation.pdf in 2006 in Rajasthan 18644 cases and no deaths compared with 1763793 cases and 294 deaths in Assam and 3029567 cases and 134 deaths in Orissa. |

They breed in water tanks, etc.
Assam is one of the highest-risk areas; using it as a yard stick makes no sense at all. Anyway, the very last thing that should be believed is government statistics! |

true but the point is that in terms of risk there is a whole lot less risk of malaria in Rajasthan. Personally I'd take the pills if I was going to Kolkatta and Varanasi this time of year - less inclined to if Rajasthan was the only place I was going.

Thanks for the advice! I think I will start taking them a week before I am due to be in Varanasi!
