Not a medical doctor but I would recommend against Larium (mefloquine). Too, too much smoke there not to be a fire. Besides I am crazy enough already. I'll crib from another post given my slow typing:
...have to learn a lot about malarials and make an informed decision. Here is a very rough summary (someone else did a better one a couple of weeks ago): Malarone: fewest side effects but not none. Costs mucho dinero. The Brit regime, P & G (Proguanil & Chloroquine): Some side effects and some concern about effectiveness. But, in my uninformed opinion, usable. Chew a Chloroquine tablet sometime for an interesting experience. My little boy learned to swallow pronto. Doxycycline: Cheap and effective, requires care in use. Can cause sun sensitivity (me), yeast problems in some women, not for small children. Make certain of the expiration date. Chloroquine: Dirt cheap in India but considerable problems of resistance in some areas. Artemison (Chinese herbal): Effective but resistance is developing to it (malaria is a moving target like AIDS). Much of the available product, perhaps as much as 2/3rds, is fake produced in China or Bihar, India. Assorted herbal & homeopathic: Consider powdered dry cow dung. Morarji Desai lived to his 80's and survived an air crash. Faith does have an impact. Brute luck: Works for many and did for me for a couple of years. But, you can get the big m in cities and in low risk areas, trust me.. The aforesaid does not constitute a warranty and Dr. Kildare reruns (Nick at Night channel) do represent greater medical authority. ... Disclosure: my family takes Doxy on the prescription of my sister in law in Hyderabad. And if I didn't she would raise the ceiling with fierce oratory. {Nothing feircer than a Bengali woman, think Durga) Only I tend to tingle a bit in the first week.. |
