malaria being brought into Europe via Goa

An increase in numbers of malaria cases has recently been reported in travellers returning from India, in particular from the state of Goa, on the west coast. These cases have been reported to the European Network on Imported Infectious Disease Surveillance (TropNetEurop, http://www.tropnet.net).

That seems quite alarming - due to the above average rainfall, they mentioned the dry season, when does that officially start though?

Maybe the clowns here (Govt.) will realise that there is a problem and do something about it.

There was some talk of isolated malarial mosquitoes in Essex quite a few years ago.

I live in Essex and I have not seen or heard anything.

I would have thought that it was too cold and dry in Essex!

Recommendation for Malaria:
India
malaria risk in the whole country including Goa regimen 2 or 1, no risk in northern mountain states, regimen 4

Regimen 1 Mefloquine one 250mg tablet weekly. OR
Doxycycline one 100mg capsule daily. OR
Malarone one tablet daily.
Regimen 2 Chloroquine 300mg weekly (2x150mg tablets). PLUS
Proguanil 200mg daily (2x100mg tablets).

Regimen 4 No prophylactic tablets required but anti mosquito measures such as insect repellents, mosquito nets, long sleeved clothing, etc. should be strictly observed.

I remember there was an outbreak in Toronto about 20 years ago - probably fueled by those Sun charters to & from the Carribean.

With Global Warming apparently on the rise, it is an issue to keep an eye on - for sure!

Malaria was a common disease here in Sweden in the 18th century , described by among other Linnaeus (Carl von Linne). Soon to be back.

Yes,
This is exactly how it was put to my wife and i at the g.p.`s
last night.
One thing i hadn`t budgeted for was the price of the chloroquine
and proquanil combination which for our seven week trip will cost
£96 each. Also, (different, i know) we were asked to go away and
seriously consider 3X rabies shots at £40 a time.
This then will equate to over four hundred sterling, a massive
ammount,...
but, what is your life worth ? a lot more than that, for sure.
Martin.

A single rabies shot will cost you just Rs 300 or so.

Good Grief! It's a pity it's always cheap viagra in the spam mails.

Someone should try cheap anti-malarials!
