I have heard of malaria antidote kits which are essentially a superdose of malaria meds given all at once if you are unlucky enough to contract the disease. The person who told me this experienced a feeling of unwellness the whole time she was on the prophylactic meds and discontinued them in favour of the antidote kit which she never had to use.
Anyone have experience with the kits? |

Using a "kit" for the treatment of a lethal illness like malaria is being stupid in my opinion.

With a real case I doubt you would be any way capable of quack doctoring yourself. No way I was..

Why do so many people think that malaria is a disease that is ok to prevent/treat with amateur fiddling? Would they talk like this about typhoid? tuberculosis? Polio? ... ... ...

Hey, don't get excited!...I wasn't suggesting any "quackery"! I was told about this by a friend who is a doctor's daughter. I asked her dad who has heard about it but doesn't feel it is as effective as the preventative use of the SAME drugs. He suggested we speak to the travel clininc whose doctors specialize in travel medicine. We have an appointment set up to do this. I just thought someone out there may have heard about this form of ALLOPATHIC treatment of malaria. I'll let this forum know what we learn at the travel clinic.

Malaria takes different sets of symptoms and there are different treatments for different varieties of malaria as well. Check out the treatment section of the CDC site. Also, well meaning GPs are a hazard for tropical medicine. Cheers..

Sorry, but more nonsense (eg I eat boiled eggs every day I never get malaria) gets atlked about this subject, it gets a bit waring sometimes.
I think that one danger of relyying on malarial treatment rather than perevention is that it can kill quite quickly. ---perhaps its time I started on another course! |

Agreed. The average GP in the US/Canada is not very well informed about Malaria. Most GP's in the US/Canada have never treated a single malaria patient in their entire career. |

I don't know about other cities, but Vancouver has a Travel Clinic which specializes in advice about medical issues re travel. You have to pay a $30 fee per person.
