Take 100 mg of vitamin B-1 daily.
This is true but works best if you build it up in your system for about a month before you're exposed to the mosquitoes. After that, they won't find you appealing.

I only use what's been scientifically proven to work and that list has just grown longer! Skin So Soft does not work for more than a very short time, if at all. The Deet products work well but as we know, require care--don't use under clothes, wash off--which makes no sense if you need to sleep with it on. Anyway, there are also lots of DEET formulas, some have a low dose that has been altered to release slowly and don't get absorbed into the skin (that would be Ultrathon (expensive) and some Sawyer products in the US). The good news as of about 2 weeks ago, the CDC (Center for Disease Control in the US) has announced that Repel Lemon Eucalyptus works almost as well as DEET and I am definitely going to get some. Also a product sold in Europe with some chemical called picaridan-- as Autan is excellent.

When it comes to Malaria, there's no point fooling around with anything that hasn't been proven to work. There is a world wide effort to find things that work and I'd go with what's been scientifically tested (they use volunteers to get bitten--yeow!) rather than someone's personal experience or opinion or myths of vitamins and "natural products"--which may work fine but without controlled studies, I wouldn't chance it. Some people never get a bite no matter what they do! And bed nets are the best defense since the malaria mosie comes out at dusk and disappears at dawn. But the mosie that carries Denque Fever, which there is no treatment for, is around all day and night.....so bug stuff is important.

How were things "tested" before scientific tests? By someone's personal experience. I've done my research on malaria meds and will listen to my doc, but I see nothing wrong with trying "natural products" especially if they have been "tested" by someone's "personal experience" like in the Amazon, and especially when it comes to DEET. (and no, I am NOT a paid representative!).

The reason there are few controlled studies of "natural products" or alternative therapies, is because there's no money in it for big corporations or pharmaceutical companies in the United States, that's the bottom line. Europe is a different story, where "natural" products ARE tested and are more readily recommended to patients; here in the US, the FDA doesn't bother. The FDA is concerned primarily with prescription meds. For example, SAM-E, a "natural" product, has been studied for years in Europe as a "natural" alternative for prescription arthritis medicine. And I can attest by my own personal experience that it is wonderful for this totally arthritic body.

My husband works for a wholesale pharmaceutical company and he was just at a conference where a it was announced that a major drug company will unveil "prescription strength" (i.e., bought by prescription only) fish oil capsules, the same stuff you can buy OTC. Why are they doing that? Because it's all about the Benjamins, so they can tap into the "natural" health market.

I seem to remember that with all the "controlled studies" and "scientific testing" of arthritis medicine, Vioxx, Celebrex, and Bextra have all been recalled, or at least, people have been told about serious side effects.

I rarely get my knickers in a twist, or is it rarely wear knickers?? One of those.

Anyway, I'm the type who usually gets WAY TOO MUCH info, and I agree that info (and knowledge) is power. But I'm a natural type of gal, and if a "natural" product works just as well, I'd rather use that than line the pockets of the medical "establishment"....

I did that one year -- and came down with the yeast infection of the century. I'd rather use DEET than go through that again!
