Sounds unlucky. Sure it's not mumps?
For anyone else coming out here, the tablets are obtainable very cheap in any pharmacist. I think the dose is 2 a year or something. This disease could easily (read cheaply) be irradicated.
My wife and I both took the tabs without side effects. Also there are hardly any mozzies about this year.

I've taken the tablets for elephantiasis.
Got them free from a doctor.

No problem. No side-effects.

January 2006 - I saw a German tourist in the Lila Cafe at Baga River who had a bad case of Eleph' his legs had been bandaged fronm the knee down and his feet were really swollen (like blown up rubber gloves). It looked like he had been staying in Goa for a few months (deep tan) but didn't look like he had loads of bites. It didn't look pleasant at all.

Maybe you don't need that many bites!
