laser eye surgery

Hi lads,
I've seen lots of info about dentistry but I was wondering if anyone has heard of or experienced laser eye surgery in India.

I know of a good one here in pune, It's known as NIO (National Institute of Opthamology) they're known to do Lasik treatment quite well. Also some other technology which is better than Lasik. There is also a hospital in the South somewhere people come from far away areas , the beauty of this place is that they subsidize the poor from the rich & they say this upfront. 30% pay for the 70% but many people do come. Mumbai/Bombay is also supposed to have good eye hospitals but don't remember any place as such.

There are several eye hospitals with world-wide reputations here in Chennai. One guy has pioneered a cataract operation that uses only a microscopic incision.

I read recently about some kind of new treatment that uses radio waves to reshape the lens to correct presbyopiea (spelling approximate) and I'm plucking up courage to enquire.

Tee Hee!

There's a medical testing place near me, plastered over the building is their motto.... Accuracy Our Ambition

If I have to have tests done, I'd expect rather more than an ambition of accuracy!

I did check a few things out on Laser surgery. I fired a few questions off to a Mumbai clinic, but in the end he said he'd have to examine me because of my diabetes. I did a cheeky one and sent off for a UK guide which they duly posted to Goa. http://www.londonvisionclinic.com/

My fiance had a consultation for this just yesterday and has booked in to have it done on 23rd March so we will let you know how it goes. She having both eyes done at a cost of rs40000 and her eyes are -175 each side if that makes sense to you!

The guy has an excellent reputation and the very latest equipment too! Whole thing takes less than half hour!

Cheers

this is something i have thought about myself in the past (i'm very short-sighted) and, though i'm confident that one can get a fully professional service in india for a vastly reduced price, i still have my doubts in the whole thing.

I think the question arises of what the long-term effects are...basically noone knows what the effects in 20 years or so might be of having the back of one's eyeball burnt by lasers to reshape the eye. And on the basis of this i have come to the conclusion, personally, that maybe contact lenses aren't such a bind

Each to his own...

Ok, here is what I know, its more like a 6th of the cost of the same treatment back home.

She is having LASIK surgery done which involves peeling back the front of the eye I believe, thank heavens I have good vision!

The doctors name is Dr Prakash Rao who appears to be more qualified than any other eye doctor in Bangalore.

He practises at Sagar Apollo Hospital which is where he would do the initial consultation and eye test to make sure you can be corrected then he will do the actual surgery elsewhere at his own premises I believe!

Email is pejavar@rediffmail.com . and this is pasted from a recent email to Jen although we did have contact in person with him last year about this!

Dear Ms Jennifer

I have been doing Lasik surgery since 1997. I expect the number to be more than 500 patients. We use the B & L Technolas Lasik machine. It is one of the best in the market. We have had excellent results with it. _1.75 can be easily corrected. It is important that the spectacle number has not changed siginificantly in the last one year.

The surgery is done for both eyes at the same time. It will take about 30 minutes. You will have to be off from work for about 1 week. The charges will be Rs 40,000/-. It may be paid by a credit card. We can do the initial evaluation at Sagar Apollo hospital. There the Consultation charge is Rs 300/- WE will need to see you 3 times, post operatively; the next day, one week later and one month later. The surgery will be done at a seperate Laser Center.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards
Dr. Prakash Rao

Cheers
Malc
