What's an "extended period?" A week? A month? Three months? A year? Two years?

This is taking an antibiotic for a very specific and valid purpose. Please do not confuse with any suggestions to take antibiotics, for instance, just in case of a mild tummy upset.

What if you need antibiotics for treatment? Will they still work?
Yes, of course they will.

The most dangerous and anti-social use of antibiotics is taking one or two doses, or an incomplete course. It is that which creates resistance, which is not only bad news for you, it is bad news to person who gets your bugs next.

But Doxy is only one of several alternatives, so if the "antibiotic" idea worries you, but you decide that you need malarial prophylaxis, you have plenty of choice!

I didn't mean treating malaria, I was referring to other conditions that are normally treated with doxycycline. And I was wondering if doxy still works in those cases.

To me several weeks or more.

I'm not confused. I was just wondering.

Yes, and I'm glad that I do have a choice.

Yeah I had that. After taking one of those elephant-sized pills a week before the trip and then when I got to Mumbai, I spent a couple days in the Red Shield staring up at the ceiling fan and seeing all the street beggars chasing me. One more pop and then I took my chances with malaria. (Spoiler: I lived.)
Jai Hind.
