Keeping stuff safe
Just wondering how you guys kept your things safe in the following situations.
1. On the trains: Ive been told to chain my bag to something whilst I sleep? Is that what you do? 2. WHen you go out: I will be staying in budget places, is it safe to leave valuable in the room all day or night? You may say "take them with you" but I dont want to be lugging a video camera with me when I go out for a drink etc. |

1. Just keep an eye on it, or if you're on a sleeper train just pop it up on the bunk with you/use it as a pillow. I guess this depends how big your luggage is and how many bags you have though.
2. I've heard people say to bring your own doorlock and secure the room with that, most of the places I stayed at didn't have doors that you could lock from outside with a padlock. If it's insured you could maybe just bring the tape with you and leave the camera behind? Don't advertise the fact that you've got an expensive camera when you check in, though. |

Better yet, don't bring anything that you don't mind losing. The freedom that comes from not having to worry about petty personal possessions is very refreshing.

In A/C train cars, there are loops beneath your seat, to which you can padlock your bag -- you may or may not need a chain. I use a nylon bag (easy to slit open) but have never had any problems, maybe because I always do lock them to that loop.
I carried my camera everywhere, along with my passport, money and whatever other "valuables" -- I never leave that stuff in my room.

Mushy
This topic has been covered a fair bit in the past - here's one thread called Backpacks I just brought it back up to the top 15 for you! Also try the search facility which should bring up some results on this topic. Regards rab

Travelled for years in India without anything being stolen from my room.
I always leave my valuables in my room, I reckon their as safe there as me carrying them around everywhere then forgetting it in the back of a rickshaw or something!! Lock your room (including any windows) and if you can't use your own lock then take the key with you!! On trains use the wire loops to attach your luggage securely makes for a great nights sleep!! Since it's an expensive camera for extra peace of mind buy your self a pack safe and keep the camera in there! I'll say it again India is not generally a dishonest country, with a bit of common sense it is as safe to travel there as in many countries around the world and a damm sight safer than most. |

Pack safe
Is a sort of strengthened wire net that fits around you pack/bag which you can lock to the bed etc. I don't use one myself but for your expensive camera it might be just the thing!

The thing about putting locks or security on my bag is that I will probably loose my keys! its happened before and Ive had to break bags to get into them.
I guess I'll just use my head, not leave it anywhere stupid. |

And don't let anyone watch too closely while you unlock it!
Someone tried to do this, quite obviously, at a dive in Mt Abu (arrived close to midnight and that's all there was).
