katadyn hiker water filters

Hi,
We have a Katadyn hiker water filter. This has done us fine in SE Asia and Europe.

However, i am wondering if it will be good enough to deal with India?

We will be travelling with 2 very small children (aged 1 and 3) so don't want to take any un-necssary risks. But we also feel quite strongly about not leaving plastic bottles everywhere, or even drinking from dodgy old plastic!

When traveling to India before (pre kids)we used to drink the water in resturants all the time and never became sick (it was actually a dodgy bottle of water that made me sick!), but with kids I feel we cant take the risk.

Anyone used the katadyn hiker?

Read the materials produced by the manufacturer. If it filters out all bacteria and parasties, then you're safe from those. The main concerns with viruses would be Hep A so be sure you're immunized for that.

Be sure to ask your hotel where to get "drinking water" before you filter it. Sometimes the taps in the bathrooms have a lower quality water (for example in Ladakh it might be pumped straight from a surface stream in the town) whereas you should filter what is already considered drinking water (which those same hotels in Ladakh carry in containers from a nearby govt supply).
