Thanks for your insights, both of you. We will be in India for at least a year and although we will be living in Delhi, we expect to travel quite a bit, and will probably spend time in neighboring countires as well. We've weighed the risks but it seems like taking the vaccine is still the best option for us although I can see why some people with different plans might make a different choice.

Does anyone have any information about the cholera vaccine? My doctor in the States recommended it but said it is not available there- I know it is legal in Mexico, but we have so far been unable to find it.... I've never found anyone who has actually had one- your thoughts?

Thanks!

My BF got the vaccination because our travel doctor told us that in the past 3 months over 30,000 people were infected with JE..... I cant seem to find where he got these numbers from though. I havent gotten it yet, but I probably will.

I was telling the nurse in the travellingc., when I was having my 2/3 JEs, that the first one gave me a little headache and I felt ill the rest of the day.
She said to me, that if the second one gives you headache etc., you can reconsider not having the third one. Those two would give me rather reliable protection, since I'm not so far planning to travel to those risk areas of India.

Also she said, that it's ok to fly before ten days has passed after the third JE, as I'm going to. I'm having them all three JE's within one month. First two ones didn't harm me, permanently. Has anybody experienced something wrong after the third one?

Will be traveling round for 3 months, more in the south, but a few weeks in the north, mostly in bigger towns/cities.. hhmm

I hope you know that you can just go to your doctor, get the script for all the necessary vaccines, go to Pharmacy by Mail to get them cheaply (this only works for Australians) and then go back to your doctor and they can administer the shots for you!

Cut out the middle man - the travel clinic! They charge s--loads for what?? Nothing!

I was told the same, about $400 for all the shots.
Did some research on the net and from the LP, told my doctor (she jumped up and said 'Ooh! That's a great idea!!') and now I'm getting a friend of mine (RN) to give me the jabs. So even CHEAPER!

All up, under $200!

So there you go, pays to do your homework if you're serious about saving money!

Plus, the doctor will be impressed with your extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical preparations and diseases

Hi. Just thought to mention that the 3rd one gave me no symptoms at all. Only them first two. So, way to go.

I think this is quite dodgy advice. My travel doctor is only giving me 2 JapE jags because I would only have 6 days after the third one before I fly and she says it isn't worth the risk. Although the chances are probably quite slim, some people develop breathing difficulties after their 3rd shot (up to 10 days after). Obviously you don't want breathing difficulties when you're 30,000feet in the air!! This must be quite a recognised problem as my Doctor gave me a special card to carry with me that says I've had the vaccine. Apparently some people have problems even after the 2nd shot so the card is in case I have breathing problems and then the hospital will know why. Scary!!

I wasn't going to take the JE vaccinations but the travel doctor was quite strong in recommending them. That said, she was recommending them more for the South East Asia part of my trip than for India. If you're not in India in the rainy season then you're probably OK.

Do it!

If I would travel in an afffected area, I would take the shot. A couple of years ago my wife and myself went to Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar and took this vaccination. It was recommended, but it was difficult to get the medicine here in Germany, because it was not approved at this time. There were no side effects at all, it didn't make us sick. During this trip we were very happy for each vaccination we had. At least it gave us a good feel and calmed us down. If it was necessary? We will never know. But I think it was worth to spend this 100$.

ALOHA!

I MUST do a report on my Jap E shots! Thanks to all who posted in this helpful thread.

I am doing the condensed version of 24 days total.

Day 0. day 7. day 14, and 10 days waiting period.

1 out of 10 who recieve the shot have a HUGE list of side effects possible. It seems like the most nasty, dangerous vaccination there is. Not to mention the $133 each shot costs! THATS $400 total!!
It costs so much because of the 30 minute waiting period thats madatory after the shot.

Only one place on Oahu, Hawaii had it: Straub travel clinic.

I am going to endemic areas for 3-5 months, during *dry season*, and I dont know if I will be in cities or in the wilderness. After extensive research I concluded:
being in a RURAL ENDEMIC AREA DURING MONSOON is 1 out of 5000 of getting it.

So I got it anyway... ARGH!!!!

Shot one: Nothing! No fever, no swelling, nothing! Not even a sore arm! I usually take it easy for a day, but this was the EASIEST shot ever!

Shot 2: I got this one 9 days later NOT 7 as expected!! I dont know how bad this is, but the lady said it was cool (dodgy advice #1).
So I get the shot, hang out for like 10 minutes, she just says "your okay you can go". Sweet.

Shot 3: This last one is on wednessday. Then I leave 8 days later!
The lady said the risks of breathing problems on day 8-10 PALES in comparrison to the risk of getting Jap E. Also, she said the 10 day waiting period is due to ONE SINGLE account, of some traveler getting breathing problems in the air on day 10... (Dodgy advice #2?)

Either way, I feel great, everything is cool so far.

Hippy,
perhaps im wrong and cofused (comes with the territory!)
But I believe the CDC does mention GOA as an Endemic area for Jap E.

Most likely during the wet seasons, however..

Don't worry about me, if it was my choice I would'nt bother with any vaccinations, nor malaria pills ( just like the old days). However, now having a wife who insists on the basic vaccinations I toe the line,,,,,,,,,,,,,
