Is this ridiculous or what, people!

Just FYI, my mum (of all people!!) forwarded this onto me as a 'warning' about drinking coca cola in India ... note: is there even a river in Delhi to go 'boating' on????

Hi Everyone

This incident happened recently in Delhi and we need to be even more
careful everywhere.

A woman went boating one Sunday, taking with her some cans of coke.

On Monday she was taken into ICU and on Wednesday she died.

The autopsy revealed a certain germ Leptospira caused by the can of
coke from which she had drunk, not using a glass.

A test showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence
the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deadly substances.

It is recommended to clean the upper part of soda cans before drinking
out of them as they have been stocked in warehouses and transported
straight the shops without being cleaned.

A study in Spain showed that the tops of soda cans are more
contaminated than public toilets i.e. full of germs and bacteria.

So! to wash them with water is advised before making any contact with
mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

Remember to always use a glass or a straw and pass this
on to everyone you care about.

I wasn't intending on drinking coke anyway, just wondering if anyone else has heard of this before in India?!?!!

Cheers,
F.

If she read it on the internet it must be true. Wait. No. I change my mind! It's ridiculous.

Whenever you see something like this my advice is to copy/paste part of the text into a google search. Guess what? It's there:

http://www.snopes.com/toxins/raturine.asp

Let it be a lesson: Be cautious, and don't believe everything you read, ESPECIALLY if you're advised to forward the message "to everyone you care about."

Not necessarily that it happened in India but I got a similar email from a friend in the US which had a general warning to wash drink cans before drinking the contents. Urban legend?!

hehe iyou, you're a star!!

It sounded dodgy on first reading it, it just annoyed me that people feel the need to make up stories to try and discourage others from going to India! It wasn't the first 'oooh India is dangerous' chain mail that I've received ... 4 in the past month!

Anyway, have a nice day everyone

Coca Cola

Glad to hear this is yet another urban legend to feed people's paranoia.

However, I don't drink Coke for a different reason - my Dad used to work in the oil industry and they routinely used coca cola to clean the inside of pipelines - it is extremely effective as it is so caustic/acidic.

You'd think therefore that any bugs that existed on the outside of the can would be well and truly fried before they had the chance to kill you in your stomach??!!

Beware, breathing air kills you .......

I got an e-mail with the same story (forwarded by a friend) a couple of years ago, but the incident described happened in the US. It even had the name of the place the can was bought from. I don't know if the story is true though .

Even if this incident is not true, it is always advisable to wash the top of the can before drinking. Who knows where the can has been? Same goes for other similar food products.

This story had been doing the rounds since a long time now and it must have circumnavigated the globe many times over with the internet but still does not stop going around another time!!! Use your common sense and you should be fine in India!!! I don't drink Coke or Pepsi as a choice but prefer Gingerale!!! Any bottle or can should be carefully washed before using to prevent any dirt from the storage it has been in!!! Prevention is always better than cure!!! In the southern states in India, Coke is used as a pesticide to spray on crops and see how hygienic it is now!!! HAHAHA!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

My Dad always used to say to never drink out of the bottle in case a dog had pissed on it.
Stick to

Don't see many cans here, mostly plastic bottles (don't know which is worse, environment-wise; the plastic probably ).

I'm not exactly a hygene freak, but I don't like drinking from cans in UK!

Always wash the can top before drinking. The cans are often transported & stored in dirty environment.

Exclamation germs are deadly

The answer is simple on dring from bottles.
If you drink enough coke its more likely to kill you.

In 2003 some stocks of coke and other softdrinks had to be withdrawn fron sale from the southern part of india because the water used in manufacture was tainted with arsnic.

Its a true story it happened to a freind of a frend of mine.

If someone is choking or has a bone stuck in their throat, give them coke, the bubbles and liquid is most effective at dislodging the obstruction.

Coke can save lives ~ believe it or not.
My wife has seen it been used in the EMC when she has been on duty.
