Is it possible to travel India and be healthy?
Am I the only one who doesn't think we'll see them again.

I lived in India for almost a year without getting sick. If you're careful with water( and ice ) you'll be fine.
Wild dogs are a problem in villages, try to stay away from them. And Bollywod... a part of India , and a lovely experience f you go to a cinema there! :-) Enjoy your trip, without paranoia!

6 trips so far, another one coming this July/August, all over India, low budget, but screens or mosquito net, and never gotten sick. Partly luck and good genes, but basically go veg., eat in busy places, eat what's in season and what everyone is happily eating. I often take doxycycline if going to malaria areas, which probably kills a lot of odd things as well. Don't worry, embrace non-fear, read Thich Nhat Hahn on that. You can always squeeze lime or lemon juice on things and chant "pure, pure, pure" as recommended in "The People's Guide to Mexico" ,the book that taught me and many others about travel, and has much that is relevant to India.
Well, it's been good to hear the opinions of those who have been, seen and lived. Also, to hear from those who are thinking of going and have been through a similar process. Sometimes it's just nice to get ones ideas out on paper, and if you're doing that, why not share with people who are knowledgeable about the topic?
Anyway, thank you all, for your food for thought. There's lots of information about, so for the sake of avoiding redundancy, I'll read more before I ask more.

Oh sure I ate a few hotdogs as a child, and a can of coke or two, but nowadays, water comes from a spring up the mountain, the veges from the back yard, and when I eat meat, it's freshly caught wallaby or fish. Also, nothing needs to go on my skin and hair. My post seems to have given the impression that I am as naive as Paris Hilton - hey, when it comes to India, I probably am. Be assured, however, that I am aware that the West is not some squeaky clean, chemical free, bastion of hope. Anyway, thank you all, for your food for thought. Hey, she'll avoid all the problems you seem to have dealing with India, A/C cars, Hilton hotels, nice restaurants.... and won't worry about becoming any more toxic cocktail than she is now
carpe diem I'm afraid you'll have to forego some of the pillars of your existence in visiting India, because all that you mention is apparent. And then there are a host of other social problems you haven't even touched upon.
But there exists the opportunity to see remnants of a older way of life, based on community, unfettered by mass consumerism.
A spirit of mankind, often obscured in our fast paced, anonymous societies we in the "west" embolden every day with rampant condumerism/capitalism....
Judging by your outlook on life I think this may be something that overrides the very real reservations you have about visiting India.
A look at life in the raw without the safety nets.

Oh yes, there is foreigners only, no room for Indians annoyance ←
Don't lose your passport. Guard it safely. I am not sure how much your mouth opening would help with the front desk. ←
