Even reputable pharmacies are prepared to sell antibiotics without batting an eyelid - even though the packets have "prescription only" stamped on them. I've purchased several types of antibiotic myself, also melatonin for jet lag.

In India, laws are one thing, enforcement is a totally different issue.

By law, yes.
In reality, almost never.

And even if you go in just wanting to buy some throat lozenges (Vicks or the like), you may get sold antibiotics you didn't want but were too sick and weak to argue about.

Well that's what happened to me, anyway.

Apparently in some (most?, all?) of the places, if a pharmacy refuses, the locals will boycott it via the grape vine, so from a business survival standpoint, what else to do?

Be sure you know the generic name, NOT what it's called here in the US. Google is your friend; it will tell you.

They are tightening up a bit. They don't allow Codeine cough syrup anymore. You have to get old stock through "channels"..
