Iodine to purify water etc

Ive read in a few places iodine can be used to purify water etc Went to the pharmacy to buy some in readiness but all they had was an antiseptic solution of 10% iodine which pharmacist told me was to put on wounds etc and he dıdnt seem to think it was drinkable .....

Is this what people actually use or is there something more specific?
If something different, which maybe I cannot find here, is it buyable in India itself?

PS I know that iodine can stimulate thyroid but thats ok, mine is underactive so it will be a bonus!

Hi Yildiz,

I was also given iodine advice for drinking water but also to use a bit in a couple ounces of water after meals to kill some of the possible bugs in food.

You need to find FOOD GRADE iodine which is safe and okay for thyroid unless you overdo it. I am not sure where you would purchase it for yourself. I got mine from a nutritionist who has traveled to India often and swears by it.

Outdoor sports shops will have the good stuff which includes a taste treatment. Note the instructions about higher altitudes..
