Insurance hell : One way insurance ex Aus

Yet another insurance question, and I know posting here is a last-ditch effort.

I'm moving from Australia to Canada. On the way I am spending 2 months in India.

I've literally tried 10 insurance companies here in Australia and no one will insure me for a one-way trip. They all insist that the trip has to begin and end in Australia.

I surely can't be the only one to have gone through this. Can anyone out there help me?

*Sigh*

Of course the next phone call I make I get someone who will insure me.

STA will insure one-way trips but it's about 50% more than what I have been quoted elsewhere if it was a regular plan. What a pain in the butt.

Sorry guys if I wasted your time on this one.

No problems; people might still have other recommendations, and the thread may be read by someone in the same situation

Try an Insurance broker (Yellow pages or a Google). The mass selling (therefore cheap) companies churn out standard policies to mmet the average needs.

Non standard requirements like one way policies will probably require you to pay more. Virtually all the major Insurance companies sell travel insurance - Allianz, Suncorp, NRMA, AMP etc

Thanks for the tips Obione, however I have been going through a broker and even he was scratching his head!

Tomorrow I will push on and try to get a better rate. I'll report back if I get anything!

What would be the problem in not telling them that you are going to Canada ?

If you book a journey Oz => India & just put that you are going for 2 months, you should be covered.

Obviously, you won't be covered for the India => Canada component but this may not be too important.

If they argue that you are not coming back, you could respond that if there is an accident requiring your return to Oz, that you would be coming back for treatment.

Alternatively, what about getting insurance from Oz=> India => Canada ? This should then put you with coverage for the period you are in India and get past the bureaucracy.

Cheers
Zoltan

Hey there Zoltan,

I think the issue here is residency and where you would be repatriated should there be an accident. The issue is that I'm not a resident of Australia and so no one wants to insure me. I've been told that this is because of if you do get in an accident and have to be evacuated, when you get back to your country of residence the insurance company would want to pass you onto the public health care of that country.

I have private insurance in Australia which is about to run out, and I'm not a resident of Canada again yet and so am not eligible for their public health care. Sort of rock = hard place. And I don't want to lie about my residency status to an insurance company (most stipulate that you MUST be a resident for them to sell you the product) as that would give them reason to cancel the policy should I claim anything on it.

Now...with that said, I've found 3 places so far that will insure me one way through student travel agencies. The best rate I've gotten so far is A$70 over the regular insurance rate as if I was a resident.

Hope all that makes sense!

For the benefit of those reading, here are some links for organizations that allow one way insurance ex Australia. You'll have to ring them however, as most won't allow one-way to be bought off their websites.

http://www.columbusdirect.com.au/
http://www.studentflights.com.au/

I went with Student Flights, who are underwritten by Covermore insurance. They were cheaper than elsewhere but the coverage was better.
