It is a very individual thing. A DEET alternative marketed as Autan in UK was 'shit' as far as I am concerned. Not one mosquito even wavered in its path towards my skin when I used the stuff. But it is rated as effective and works for others.

It may be that you need a higher concentration to mask your personal body smell, and Autan doesn't mask mine at all.

Up until yesterday, when the builders started renovation work, everything in and around our new Chennai house was a haven for mosquitoes, and moving anything disturbed a cloud of the things --- which would head straight for my ankles. Odomos mostly kept them off.

You have to find what works for you. Bit of an expensive pain if you've brought along several bottles of something that turns out not to!

I am also a mossie magnet & react very badly to bites too (need lots of antinhistamines etc!). The best thing I've found to buy ion India is also Odomos - the lotion goes on just like a skin moisturiser & if applied regularly works really well. Supplement it with a spritz of 'good knight' spray if you really have a tough problem with mossies like me!

Try a controlled release DEET product, where the stuff is encapsulated so it doesn't get absorbed into your skin all at once.
DEET has been know to cause headaches when too much is breathed in.

Good suggestion above although I too am an Odomos fan.

Funny, Consumer Reports tested it and ...

it was a failure and even more so against malarial mosquitos..

One of the cleverest inventions I have seen lately in the War on Mozzies are the DEET-impregnated bracelets that you wear on your ankles and your wrists which give off a gradual stream of poison in your vicinity without harming the wearer. I bought them at Heathrow airport in London. They work! Other than that, smoking Bidis helps a lot too, I find... On the prevention side, and apologies if this is the third time I am referring to this, we have twice in India used most effectively a spray made up by a friend (who is a pharmacist) which spray contains essential oils of various plants that mosquitoes love to hate (i.e. citronella, lavendar, neem, etc. - there are at least six different ones - it is not patented and its actual composition remains a mystery). This particular spray even repelled sand flies in the Andaman Islands!

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has a preference on repellents avaliable for purchase in the UK? The options seem to be jungle Forumla, Lifesystems, Repel, and Boots own brand. All have various strengths and some have DEET......help!?

The DEET concentration governs how long before you have to re-apply the repellant... but too much DEET may burn your skin. The product I use (from the US; it's in solid "stick" form) is just under 30% DEET and that usually gives me around 5 hours of protection.

Whatever format suits you is what you should buy.

Note that while the malaria mossies bite at night, there are also daytime-biting mossies and those carry dengue fever, so you may have to use your product in the morning, as well.

The controlled release stuff we use is [I recall] 22%. Because it's control released, it is supposed to be less likely to trouble your skin and also to last longer - 8 hours.

Be careful using Deet on children - read the package carefully.

I'd also suggest reading this article from time on potential side effects, before applying 100% deet products generously on children and oneself.

Have used the boots jungle formula many times and it has worked for me .Check that it is the one they recommend for tropical usage !
I have used 12% (odomos) 30% 50% 100% and never had any skin problems and this is the first time i have heard of any skin problems using deet ,even with the 100%, although that did melt the paint on my camera .

from http://insect-repellent.net/Deet-Permethrin/deet.htm
"Deet is a skin irritant but does not create a skin sensitivity. This means that after a period of frequent use your skin may become red, even sore to the touch, irritated by the presence of deet. You do not however develop an allergic resistance to deet. If allowed time to recover, your skin will accept the presence of deet again without rapidly developing a rash. Continued use could again develop irritation. The term “sensitivity” would refer to a condition where your skin develops a resistance to the presence of a chemical and an allergic reaction takes place if that chemical is presented to the skin. Deet has been well studied and does not cause people to develop a resistance to it. People do not develop allergic reaction or skin sensitivity to deet. The amount of deet which can be used prior to developing skin irritation varies from person to person."

I have heard about it damaging plastics too.

I had a container of "Repel 100" that was 100% DEET and it was very irritating to my skin. I still have it, so if you want it, PM me and I'll mail it to you.
